Using font awesome as icons

Is there a way to use these fonts AS the icon? I see some font projects have icon themes too, but doens't seem to be the case here. Am I left having to do a rewrite on every application and manually finding the icon for every app I use, where available? Fine if so, but feels like something better is going to be out there... Ul;intimately I just want simpler, monochrome icons. Maybe there's a different icon theme already out there unrelated to Awesome Fonts?
