@neumannd, we did some work a while back on:

1. A library of common/generic checks:

2. A tool for generating a set of checks based on YAML descriptions:

• https://github.com/cedadev/compliance-check-maker

3. A plugin for connecting the YAML files to the cc-checker:

• https://github.com/cedadev/cc-yaml

All of this uses the pyessv library for talking to CVs as stored in the structure used by CMIP6 and other ESGF projects.

Hence you should be able to define YAML checks without writing actual code...hopefully.
