In that first image, first I had to understand that there's about an 8mm offset between the thermal image and the optical overlay.
Then, interpreting the hot spot as U2 (ADN4600) makes sense. I can't tell from this photo: does U2 have a heat sink attached?
These images are taken in "still air", right? How much current drawn from the +12V supply?
The pictures were taken when a simple test gateware was running on the FPGA.
