<h2>Phobos Overview</h2>
<p>
Phobos is the larger and innermost of Mars' two moons, discovered in
1877 by astronomer Asaph Hall. It measures about 22 kilometers in
diameter and has an irregular, potato-like shape, covered in craters
and dust. Orbiting Mars at a mere 6,000 kilometers above the
surface—closer than any other moon to its planet—Phobos completes a
full orbit every 7.65 hours, rising and setting twice a day from the
Martian perspective.
</p>
<p>
The moon's surface is marked by Stickney Crater, its largest impact
feature at 9 kilometers wide, which nearly shattered Phobos.
Scientists believe it originated from the asteroid belt, captured by
Mars' gravity, rather than forming alongside the planet. Its low
density suggests a porous, rubble-pile structure, possibly
containing ice beneath the regolith.
</p>
<p>
Phobos is doomed to a dramatic fate: tidal forces are pulling it
closer to Mars at about 1.8 meters per century. In roughly 30-50
million years, it may either collide with the planet or disintegrate
into a ring system. Missions like Japan's MMX (Martian Moons
eXploration), planned for sample return in the late 2020s, aim to
study its composition and origins further as of 2025.
