Why isn't the Edit button showing for my dataset?

Possible reasons why the Edit button is not showing up for your dataset:

1. You don't have write access to either the EML or Resource Map

For the MetacatUI editor to work, you need to have write access to both the EML and the Resource Map object (because the resource map will need to be updated with the new EML id and any new data ids upon any update in the editor). They are two separate objects in Metacat with their own system metadata and access policies.

Solution:

1. Check the system metadata of both objects and make sure your ORCID is in the rightsHolder or accessPolicy
2. Update the system metadata of either object that is missing the ORCID in the rightsHolder or accessPolicy

2. MetacatUI or Metacat is configured with the wrong DataONE CN

Each MetacatUI and Metacat instance need to be configured with the same DataONE CN for authentication to work. If your Metacat is configured to use the production CN at https://cn.dataone.org, but your MetacatUI is configured for the test CN at https://cn-stage.test.dataone.org, your CN configuration is mismatched and needs to be corrected.

Solution:

• Change the MetacatUI config d1CNBaseUrl and the Metacat Coordinating Node URL in the Metacat admin panel so that they are the same.

3. Your ORCID in the access policy/Sharing Options starts with 'https', not 'http'

ORCIDs are stored in the DataONE Accounts service as http://orcid.org... (even though ORCIDs starting withhttps://...are valid).

Solution:

• Open the "Sharing Options" in MetacatUI and change any ORCIDs in the list from https to http.
• If you are using the DataONE API, you will need to make sure all ORCIDs in the system metadata access policy start with http. See how to update the system metadata using the DataONE API. Make sure to change the system metadata for both the EML and Resource Map object.

4. You've recently been given Edit access and need to refresh the page

If someone has very recently shared the dataset with you or added you to a group that has Edit access, you might need to simply refresh the page and/or clear your browser cache so MetacatUI can grab a fresh copy of the dataset access policy.

Solution:

• Refresh your page and clear your browser cache.

5. You are not in the group that the dataset is shared with

If you believe you have access to a dataset via group membership, make sure you are in that group by visiting your profile and finding the group in "My groups".

Solution:

• Ask the group owner to add you to the group or have the dataset owner share with your ORCID directly

6. Lastly, you are not signed in

It seems obvious, but make sure you are actually signed in. DataONE authentication only lasts 18 hours, so if you signed in yesterday, try refreshing the page and signing in again.

Also make sure you are signed in to the exact account that the dataset owner has shared with - either an ORCID or an LDAP account (only limited legacy LDAP accounts are supported). You may also be signed in as an equivalent identity of said account (you can check this in your MetacatUI user profile).
