Can not compile on VS 2017

The description says this repo is VS 2017 compatible but due to use of a newer cmake version this repo cant compile on VS 2017. I tried to manually decrease the cmake version but it still gives errors.

The focus of the repository has shifted away from enabling modern C++ builds to focusing on Linux development.
I will remove the description string and test on Windows, once other more important cross-platform issues are solved.

Do you have the branch or backup of this repos version which can compile on VS2017?

I'm sorry, I don't keep track of the Windows versions anymore.
Our CI however constantly builds with 2022 however.

If you require assistance with 2017 please provide more information about what the problem is.
(What are the error messages saying?)

I retested the build with VS2017 on x86 and it still works.

First error:

Cmake ver 3.23 or higher is required. IN VS2017 the cmake version is 3.12

Second error (if I manually decrease cmake min version):

FetchContent_MakeAvailable is unkown cmake command

so basically all errors are caused by the repo using a later version of cmake while VS2017 uses 3.12

I wasn't aware that there even existed a version of CMake that's shipped with VS2017.

So yes, the CMakeLists are untested with earlier versions and in my opinion you should just install the newer CMake.

Even if I manage to compile it, the problem wont solve because RTS.exe is not working when downloaded from "Actions" section of this repository.

After splash screen appears, the game shows a technical error then stops working. I have even created a thread about this in discussion,

I used cmake 4.0 to create VS 2017 project files of the latest version of this repo.

At first there were errors with exporting zlib and other libraries. I looked up online, downloaded these libraries myself then set paths for cmake to use.

Now most of files are compiling but I still get errors related to external dependencies. I would recommend to either create a good guide on how to build this or to create a cmake system which properly downloads all dependencies.

Otherwise, this repo will be dead in a few months or years. Potential contributors are going to be put off by lack of instructions on how to build it,

The repo has a vcpkg in it did you use that for downloading the packages? There's a ticket for creating a build readme. I can build it just fine on Linux

How does one use this vcpkg? All i did was to use cmake GUI version 4.0.1 to confgiure and then generate project files for VS 2017. it resulted in errors as zlib and some other dependencies could not be downloaded/found.
