Hawser podman

Hey everyone! This isn’t an issue so much as a question.

I’ve always used Docker at home, but Ubiquiti recently released their UniFi Network Controller OS using Podman, which is completely new territory for me.

I’m wondering if there’s any way to run Hawser inside that VM and have it show up in Dockhand alongside the rest of my Docker servers.

I haven’t been able to find any documentation or references about doing this—does anyone know if it’s possible, or can point me in the right direction?

Yes it is possible and works because podman provides Docker-compatible api.

You have 2 options, I'd go with the first one.

1. Rootless
   systemctl --user enable --now podman.socket
2. Rootful
   sudo systemctl enable --now podman.socket

To verify it is running
(sudo) systemctl (--user) status podman.socket

Example command:
podman run -d --name=hawser --security-opt label=disable -e TZ="Europe/Brussels" -e DOCKHAND_SERVER_URL='wss://<dockhand_endpoint>/api/hawser/connect' -e TOKEN='<your-token>' -v /run/user/<the_user_id>/podman/podman.sock:/var/run/docker.sock:rw ghcr.io/finsys/hawser

The only thing a bit off is that in the UI when it displays the "podman" version it will say Docker 5.6.0 instead of Podman 5.6.0.

PS:
I don't know the Unifi setup but if you run containers rootless you might want to enable linger as containers might get killed when the user session is ended.
sudo loginctl enable-linger <your user>
