How to import npm modules with sub-directories?

I'm trying to install RxJS into a snowpack project. According to the RxJS docs, I ran npm install rxjs, then restarted the snowpack dev server, then tried to import the following (also according to the RxJS docs):

import { fromEvent } from 'rxjs';
import { map, buffer, debounceTime } from 'rxjs/operators';

fromEvent is imported correctly, but when I try to import the others, I get the error:

Uncaught TypeError: Failed to resolve module specifier "rxjs/operators". Relative references must start with either "/", "./", or "../".

in the browser, and in the terminal I see:

[snowpack] Import "rxjs/operators" could not be resolved.
If this is a new package, re-run Snowpack with the --reload flag to rebuild.
If Snowpack is having trouble detecting the import, add "install": ["rxjs/operators"] to your Snowpack config file.

I tried following both of the suggestions but they had no effect. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Hmm, that's definitely unexpected. Do you have a standard project layout? If you could share some steps to reproduce, or if you could reproduce in a Create Snowpack App template and then share those steps, that would be great!

Hey! Sorry for the delay, I haven't yet had a chance to try reproducing but hope to soon (@gr2m would actually love your help on this one, if you can).

One thing to try if you haven't yet: running Snowpack with the --verbose flag will generate some helpful debugging info.

@DouglasDev I was able to reproduce the problem. Starting the dev server with --reload resolved the problem for me. Can you try to run this and see if it makes it work? If not, can you please share the logs?

npx snowpack dev --verbose --reload

That fixed it. Thanks so much to both of you! I think the problem was that I was trying npm run start --reload and the flag wasn't getting passed in.

Ah yes, in order to pass CLI arguments to the actual command, you have to add a -- separator:

npm run start -- --reload

I'll see if we can add this to our CONTRIBUTING.md instructions.
