Coiling serpent-like at the bank of the lake, its trunk as black as ebony, it is nonetheless crowned with a bevy of boughs which arch gracefully over the water's edge. The tiny, glittering leaves of this willow punctuate the silvery shimmer of the lake surface just beyond, creating a mesmerizing effect.</description>

<description>Dead and dying willow trees surround you. Grass grows in intermittent clumps along the muddy ground, looking frail and glasslike. You are walking an incline pocked with many holes through which heat seems forced by underground bellows. Before you lies a massive yawning cavity in the earth, spewing forth a heavy column of steam. The earth trembles, and there is a deep rumbling from far below. Though your knees grow weak, you manage to steady yourself, knowing that one false move will plummet you to your death.</description>

Now and then, you hear a loud gurgling followed by a fantastic hiss, but the heavy mists surrounding you prevent you from seeing much of anything.</description>

Every step upon the exposed rock is treacherous.</description>

<description>A long-forgotten wind chime defies humidity and time to produce a faint tinkle as a warm breeze passes by. Broken furniture is sunken into the floor of the bog -- a chair here, a desk there, a chest of drawers further on. The faint outline of a building foundation juts out of the mire, but is nothing more than a mess of rotting planks which suggest a living area, bedroom and what might have been a kitchen.</description>

There is little room to maneuver, and at varying intervals there is a gush of water which spills in from above. Hardly fit for any inhabitant, it is nonetheless populated by at least one furry skittering thing, which wraps itself around your ankles as it maneuvers through the darkness.</description>

<description>Cascading sludge pours from above, pooling in a fetid hollow within the roots which dangle from above. The walls of this tiny cavern glisten with accumulated slime, and are populated by caterpillars, roaches and sightless beetles. The incredible stench is enough to overpower even the most seasoned warrior.</description>

<description>Thick, searing mist shrouds the ghosts of several thatched-roof houses which stand to either side of a crumpled bridge. Bits and pieces of the cobblestone road peek from the bog which is desperate to claim these man-made structures. A lone tree, long dead, stands in the midst of what must have been the village green.</description>

Around its base is some cracked, circular stonework which was once the foundation of a large fountain. <description>A soggy carpet sends up the strong smell of decay, and the wallpaper is splashed with mud. The furniture in this grand foyer is smashed to pieces, covered with moss and lichen, and turning a sickly black. The bottom portion of a grand stairway has fallen apart, eliminating any possibility of exploration among the upper rooms.</description>

With an overwhelming sense of lethargy, you begin to watch the outermost ripple advance across the width of the lake, until some deeply-rooted instinct tells you what you're seeing is impossible. When you blink, you find the lake is perfectly still, and there is no sign of the fallen leaf. </description>

<description>Traveling along this bank of the lake, you notice the water is so clear you can see the shallow, pebble-strewn lake bed. Though the lake appears still, the pebbles seem to undulate slowly, redefining their shape, merging and separating. Your sense of balance skews, and you find yourself leaning forward over the water. It takes all of your strength to pull yourself upright and shake off the desire to sleep.</description>
