In the discussion related to FHIR-42621 on 11 Dec 2023 we decided that this functionality should be integrated in the publisher process.
A special character in the display (e.g. "*") would trigger the publisher to populate the display value of the Coding instance with the corresponding display value.

The problem is that this proposes wholesale changes to the content of the resources at some time after loading. So it's not as simple as it sounds - we'll have to think through how the process works very carefully

I totally agree - hence an interesting topic for a Connecthaton...

We can make this happen as part of the language work (when we'll end up needing to change display values anyhow - so populating rather than changing should be pretty straight-forward).
