Does not highlight syntax, nor recognise .tex format

What I did (steps to reproduce)

I created a project using New -> Project -> Latex, the opened the file, I see the syntax is not highlighted & no suggestions are shown

Expected behavior

It should highlight & show suggestions for control sequences

Actual behavior

Nothing gets highlighted

Strangely, the highlighting & suggestions work for other types (.bib, .sty, .tikz, .cls) but not for .tex

In my settings, I see that *.tex was associated under Text (File | Settings | Editor | File Types)

I now removed that from there & then associated with Latex Source by adding *.tex under File Name Patterns section manually.

Now the plugin recognises & processes the file. I have no idea why that happened. Did I manually mess it up before, no idea.

I believe it is possible that others also might face this issue.

I believe this might have happened. Initially when I opened a .tex file in IDEA (before I installed this plugin), I might have asked IDEA to use to use plain Text editor for showing the file. Now, after installing this plugin, those associations have not been reset, leading to this strange case. This is my hypothesis.

Not sure why this plugin dint reset file extension association.

There should be no reason to assign .tex files to the Text filetype if you don't have the plugin installed: IntelliJ will suggest 'Plugins supported .tex files found` instead when you open the file - at least that is what happens for me.

Did you verify that you cannot open .tex files if you don't assign it to the Text filetype?

I had this issue as well, with it being consistent over multiple installed versions of intelli j.

That's what it does: if you open a .tex file for the first time, it will show a popup which suggests to install TeXiFy to view .tex files. If you decide to ignore that and instead manually assign .tex to text files, that's your decision and TeXiFy will not (and cannot) change that.

The problem is that it will also show those popups to install TeXiFy on later openings of tex files, and when you install TeXiFy as suggested by that popup (which was what I did) then nothing happens and TeXiFy appears to either not have sucessfully installed or just isn't working.
So at the least TeXiFy should be able to give the user a warning prompt when it is installed if tex files are not associated with it such that users know whats up.

That sounds like a problem, albeit a different one. It should ask for a restart immediately after installation. If it didn't, that's a problem with IntelliJ (in TeXiFy we just say that it should ask for restart, that's all). Without a restart, indeed it will not be working, but that should be clear as there won't be any syntax highlighting.

Sorry I guess I didn't explain myself very clearly. TeXiFy did indeed ask for a restart. However, after the restart everything just looked as before in pycharm, while I was expecting it to be associated with .tex files. Afterwards it took me about 20 minutes of searching around online and reading TeXiFy tutorials before I finally found this thread explaining what the issue was. While you can of course say that this is a user issue and TeXiFy is doing what it was supposed to. I would argue that file type association in pycharm is not really an active choice, you open one .tex file and you click okay once and then it is associated as text.
I would argue that TeXiFy should at least give a notice to the user saying that it is not associated with .tex files (or other similar file endings that you would expect) if such a feature is possible.

Can you show a screenshot/screencast of that? Because I cannot reproduce that: if I create a .tex file without having the plugin installed, then I see this:

So if I click 'okay' (or the equivalent of it) then it will show the plugin installation page, then after installation ask for restart and the result is not that the filetype is associated with text, but with latex.

If that is not the case for you, I am really curious what the process after opening a .tex file looks like from your end (assuming a new installation, obviously if you start out with a messed up installation the result will be mess - garbage in, garbage out :) ).
