How to validate packages are downloaded correctly?

I am trying to use TeXiFy 0.9.9 on a Mac together with BasicTeX (which is much smaller than MacTex, both are Mac distributions of TeX Live).

In contrast to MacTex, packages are downloaded on demand which seems to be supported by TeXiFy (at least packages that are not yet downloaded are underlined in yellow and I get the option to download them on right click). However, there is no such option for some packages as e.g. amssymb.

Previously, I loaded amssymb together with amsmath which resulted in the following error (however also trying to import it individually does not work):

Package amsmath,amssymb was not installed because tlmgr could not find amsmath,amssymb.sty anywhere. Try to install the package manually.

Furthermore, my document class as well as some other packages are not recognized.

QUESTION: How to validate that my packages are downloaded correctly? What is the path of downloaded packages?

When reopening IntelliJ today, I noticed that some packages and the document class are now installed and indexed properly. Might this be some caching problem?

I then noticed that I made a mistake in the example posted above. However, even after fixing this problem, I get a package problems (not only with pgfplotstable but I also with other packages like algorithmicx, intervals, ...):

If I remove line 4, my example is compiling correctly and showing the expected output. Otherwise I get

! LaTeX Error: File `pgfplotstable.sty' not found.

During the installation I had an IntelliJ Exception with Texify which I reported by just clicking the button.

Since I can now browse packages (e.g. click on amsmath), I can see that they are installed to /usr/local/texlive/2024basic/texmf-dist/tex/latex/amsmath. Indeed pgfplotstable is not part of /usr/local/texlive/2024basic while I find amsmath in its subfolder.

Any ideas?

Packages that are installed indirectly, e.g. amssymb coming with amsfonts, that is indeed a caching problem. I will check if that is easy to fix.

You can check for installed packages with kpsewhich, for example kpsewhich amssymb.sty

Do you have any recommendations of how to install pgfplotstable? Did you receive the installation exception I reported via IntelliJ?

No, I don't have a Mac so I don't know what the recommended way to installed packages is for BasicTeX. For TeX Live, you install packages with tlmgr install pgfplotstable
