How do you run Valhalla MS locally?

Hi Hucaru

Is it possible to run Valhalla maplestory locally on my own PC?
Is there any guide on how to do it from this repository?
I can see there are Docker files but i am not sure what operating system i need or what steps i need to take to make the code run.
I would like to try and play this maplestory, just by myself.
Can you please help me?

Yes, it is possible If you have docker and docker-compose installed you can start the server. You will need to generate a Data.nx file from the Data.wz file the client installs using a tool such as https://github.com/diamondo25/Maple.js/tree/master/tools/WZ2NX

Lots of features are not done as can be seen from the checklist including a lot of skills such as Haste which require specific programming.

I am still utterly lost on how to get started with the setup process. To seasoned contributors on GitHub, this might be more than enough to understand, but not intuitive for average-everyday people. A more in-depth step-by-step guide would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest following the steps in #50. The server is not at a stage where someone who doesn't have some knowledge of the tooling should use. If all you want to do is run a local server to replay the old version of the game I suggest trying some of the other servers out there as they will probably have proper instructions on how to run them.

I see. Those steps are a bit more detailed, but I am not entirely confident if I can follow everything down to the last detail without breaking something in the process. You are definitely right about not being meant for the common user to setup without the proper understanding of the required tools.

Valhalla appears to be the few, if not the only one, that strives to archive and faithfully recreate a much earlier version of MS. Many sources/servers out there are much later (v55+). A number of sources seem to include customized NPCs, maps, and items that should not exist. Many of which also states it will need some fixing due to unresolved bugs or incomplete code before being able to run, which many like myself lack the expertise to make work. I am praying that Valhalla will be the one to truly represent a classic and timeless version of early MS that no other server/source seems to want to do. To be honest, re-experiencing this game from an earlier stage of the game as a single-player on a local server would be ideal. It would not have to rely on an online public server that is run by someone else that may inevitably close down at some point.

I really appreciate you for leading the charge, @Hucaru. My appreciation also goes out to all the contributors that have helped add to this source. Honestly, all this deserves more recognition. Hopefully there is more happening behind the scenes, since there has not been many new commits as of late.

There haven't been any new commits for a while as I have been too busy to be able to allocate much time to the project. There is still a lot left to do.
