This part seems to be designed just for Li-Ion.

3310 (well, the better known 2000 model) batteries are NiMH

NiMH batteries really want the cell temperature sensor running during charge as their end of charge behavior is a lot more obvious looking at temperature rather than just terminating on cell voltage changes.

You’re absolutely right that some original Nokia 3310-era batteries were NiMH, and that NiMH charging ideally relies on temperature (ΔT/Δt) or −ΔV detection, rather than voltage alone.

For this project, however, the design choice is based on current real-world availability and usage:
Most original Nokia NiMH batteries are now 20+ years old and effectively end-of-life (high internal resistance, reduced capacity, or completely dead).

The aftermarket has largely moved to 3.7 V Li-ion (BLC-2 compatible) replacements, which are widely available and commonly used today.

These Li-ion replacements offer higher energy density, better availability, and are supported by modern, well-documented charger ICs.

For that reason, the design intentionally targets Li-ion cells, using a charger IC that correctly implements CC/CV charging, voltage termination, and safety limits for 3.7 V Li-ion batteries.
