Found when trying to update a dependent package: JuliaIO/JSONSchema.jl#67.

Given the fairly central nature of JSON.jl to the Julia ecosystem, dropping x86 support (if this was intentional) is a fairly wide reaching decision.

As mentioned on slack, x86 wasn't intentionally dropped, just no effort went towards supporting it. With packages I maintain in the Julia ecosystem, I've had to drop support at some point in the past few years and yet haven't received any requests/complaints about dropping it, so anecdotally, I'm not putting forth effort to supporting it when working on new packages. If there are requests for it though, I don't think it should be too hard to support.

Two things can be true:

Props to @quinnj. You've done a massive amount of work over a very long time to large parts of the Julia ecosystem and JSON@1.0 is a great step forward.

And: foisting a breaking change across a very large part of the Julia ecosystem comes with some responsibility. For example, I would have been happy to re-tag the existing JSON@0.21 as 1.0 and call it a day. Some breaking changes (like changing the return type) are annoying but acceptable. Dropping tier 1 platforms, less so.
