Is the SBC officially supported by the Debian installer?

The debian installer does not support this SoC as far as I know, however, there is a reliable 3rd party ubuntu based image:

(At least reliable in the sense that I've been using it without any major issues for the last week)

DietPi is not supporting Ubuntu.

Sure but given the similarities between the two, I would think that using it as a blueprint would be relatively straight forward.

We require an available Debian base image. Otherwise we are not able to install DietPi on top.

If we can fetch the kernel and bootloader sources/builds/packages, we could use it to generate a Debian image.

Hmm, RK3568B2 SoC, much slower than Odroid N2(+) but higher price. I wonder who would buy this and why? It has many hardware features, SATA, PCIe etc, maybe this is the reason?

Ah, the 4 GiB model is a little chapter than Odroid N2+ (4 GiB as well), still, the use case for this over N2 or C4 looks very small 🤔. I'll ask for a developer sample.

Bingo, without SATA or M.2 it's all just toys with an SD slot

For my use case 8gb of ram and the PCIe HD slot was the reason for the M1.

The kernel sources are found here: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroidm1-4.19.y I don't think there are release tarballs, but github will kindly generate a snapshot archive. Kernel is a bit out of date sadly. It uses Petitboot which was interesting, I haven't dug into those sources as of yet, but they should be easy to find.

I'm definitely not going to publish a new image with any Linux lower than 5.x anymore, but for initial testing it should do 😉. Kinda sad that for a new device, official images are outdated 🤔. I hope Hardkernel ships a new kernel for this SBC at some point, at least for Odroid XU4 they did. But based on experience we need to use mainline kernel sources/builds from Armbian or Debian anyway to keep up support with latest Debian versions, e.g. Bookworm kinda requires Linux 5.4 already, i.e. Hardkernels current Linux implies issues with the Debian version released next summer.

I too was quite dismayed by the downloadable images and kernel versions. I hadn't gotten around to trying to dist-upgrade as @Vebryn suggests so I'm glad that seems a viable path.

Also, despite old downloadable images (Ubuntu Focal 20.04), we can dist-upgrade to 22.04 and get 5.18 kernel.

It looks like there is Armbian support for the M1, does that mean we can get a dietpi image soon?

It should then be easy to implement at least. But I am currently busy with some other hardware implementations.

This post also has images of debian bookworm and ubuntu jammy for the M1 and M1S. From what I've seen online, the M1S is just different enough that it needs its own image.
