<p><strong>The Dean's Words</strong>
</p>
<p>
Northeastern University (hereafter NEU for short) has a glorious history of sports, and the predecessor of Physical Education Department can be traced back to the Sports Training Department founded in the 1920s, when General Zhang Xueliang, the NEU president at that time, insisted on the principle that 'it is essential to build up our people if we want to build up our country, while the priority of building up our people is to build our bodies'. Therefore, NEU held one educational philosophy of defending our country by building up our bodies, and vigorously developed physical education among the students. </p>
<p>
Adhering to the historical tradition, emphasizing physical education and advocating nationwide fitness has been a part of unremitting efforts for NEU. In recent years, NEU has seen rapid development of physical education and splendid sports achievements. The NEU basketball team grabbed the championship of the North China Conference and the national runner-up in the 2011-2012 season of Chinese University Basketball Super League; the other sports teams have won dozens of national titles among the competitions such as badminton, track and field, American football, and aerobics. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of NEU, Liu Changchun Stadium, carrying glorious sporting tradition of the university, will undertake an important mission: It will be the venue of the artistic gymnastics competition for the Twelfth National Games. NEU will take it as an opportunity to comprehensively renovate the Liu Changchun Stadium and the old gym, and strive all out to create favorable conditions for the development of sports undertakings as well as honor the Games.</p>
<p>With first-class sports facilities and significant improvement of physical education and sports competitiveness, NEU actively creates a favorable environment for bodybuilding, guided by the philosophy that exercise one hour every day, work with good health for fifty years, and live happily for a lifetime, and NEU vigorously carries out mass sports activities to both enrich the campus cultural life and invigorate the development of various undertakings. The development of NEU Physical Education Department is a long-term and systematic project, and there is a long way to go，if the development goals of her is to attain and the Physical Education Department can stand out of the fierce competition.</p>

Under the guidance of Scientific Outlook on Development nationwide and the development objectives of NEU, the NEU Physical Education Department will deepen the reform, constantly improve the teaching level of the social sports guidance and management major and non-major sports education, strengthen the development of disciplines and specialties, try to push forward the development of mass sports activities with remarkable achievements of competitive sport as well as promote the development of competitive sports with large-scale mass sports, and thus contribute better to the sports undertakings at NEU. </p>
<p><strong>1. Department Features</strong></p>

1） Long history
</strong></p>
<p>
NEU boasts its long and glorious history of sports. Liu Changchun, the first Chinese athlete competing in the Olympic Games, was admitted to the NEU Physical Education Department in 1927. His participation in the Olympics opened a new page in China's sports history and inspired the development of China's modern sports undertakings.</p>
<p>The NEU Physical Education Department was founded in 1925, and nowadays as for its administration rank, it is equal with the other colleges and directly affiliated to NEU. It plays a key role in sports education: it undertakes the teaching work of both the Sports major students (undergraduates and graduates) in the Physical Education Department and the non-sports-major students across the university, besides, it holds the responsibilities to launch the mass sports activities on the campus and coach the university sports teams for various competitions.</p>
<p><strong>2） High quality faculty</strong></p>
<p>To facilitate the teaching management, the Physical Education Department establishes four public physical education teaching and research centers (Ball Sports Teaching and Research Center, Small Ball Sports Teaching and Research Center, Teaching and Research Center for Ice and Water Sports, and Comprehensive Teaching and Research Center), Teaching and Research Department for the Social Sports Major and the Administration Office.</p>
<p>The Physical Education Department faculty includes 52 professional teachers, including 6 professors, 21 associate professors, 19 lecturers, and 6 assistant professors, among whom 14 teachers are supervisors for master students, 4 teachers have been awarded PhD degree and 22 win Master's degree, 1 teacher is accredited with the title of Famous Professor at provincial level and another one at university level, 6 teachers are international referees in 5 sport events and 19 are national referees in 9 events. Besides, 6 teachers took on the referee's duty in 5 events for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics; 4 teachers participated in 4 events of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games as referee.</p>
<p><strong>3)Education Specialties</strong></p>
<p>The Physical Education Department strives to develop education specialties and high quality courses. After many years of exploration and practice, it has well established a brand new pattern of physical education with the characteristics of "skating class as the specialty, roller-skating class as the basics, bilingual sports class as the pilot, and other classes as supplementary". The Skating class was rated as University-level Excellent Class in 2001, provincial-level Excellent Class in 2002, provincial-level Outstanding Class in 2004, and national-level Outstanding Class in 2006.</p><p>
The bilingual sports class in NEU takes the lead in China's national sports education reform, which started in 1987 and reflected the innovative spirits and far sights by the Physical Education Department.</p>
<p><strong>4)High-level Sports Team</strong></p>
<p>The Physical Education Department coaches 4 high-level Sports Teams, the basketball team, the athletics team, the badminton team and the snow and ice sports team, and these teams achieved grand honors in a series of major international and domestic competitions, writing a new chapter of brilliant sport history for NEU. It is worth mentioning that, Northeastern University men's basketball team has won 1 title of the National Collegiate Basketball Super League champions, three titles of runner-up, and grabbed good grades when they participated in the World University Games on behalf of Chinese college students.</p>
<p><strong>2.Introduction to Sports Majors</strong></p>
<p>Based on multi-disciplines such as sports studies, management studies, economics and social science, the major of Social Sports Guidance and Management intends to nurture senior professionals possessing the basic theory, knowledge and skills of social sports and competent with in the field of management, counseling, and development of mass sports activities in social sports.</p>
<p>This major is entitled to grant the bachelor's degree, with a four-year educational system.</p>
<p><strong>1) International exchanges</strong></p>
<p>The Physical Education Department closely communicates with Inha University and Changwon National University, not only invite foreign scholars to lecture in our department, but also to encourage undergraduate students to exchange study in partner institutions.</p>
<p><strong>2) Social Practice</strong></p>
<p>In addition to learning the school curriculum, the Physical Education Department provides students with social survey activities through internship base so as to comprehensively develop their overall quality and community service awareness and capability.</p>
<p><strong>3) Grants and Scholarships</strong></p>
<p>After ten-year development the Major of Social Sports has won affirmation from the NEU administration and the employers of our graduates, who provide scholarships in the Physical Education Department for excellent students of social sports major, including national scholarships, National Encouragement Scholarships, Bayi Iron & Steel scholarships, Shenyang mayor scholarships, Kentucky Dawn scholarships, and Liu Dajie-Fang Wenyu scholarship.</p>
<p><strong>4) the Employment Prospects</strong></p>
<p>Combining the academic strengths with the faculty strengths, the PE Department implements talents development strategies by stressing the features of solid foundation, wide caliber, outstanding expertise and high quality. It focuses on developing quality talents armed with fundamentals in sports science, economics, management and sports law and methods and techniques of sports education and management. Many graduates choose to continue their studies at top universities for master's and doctoral degrees, while some choose to search for employment in institutions like physical education, government agencies, large-size state-owned enterprises or foreign companies, or some social organizations.</p>
<p>In the past 3 years, the employment rate for the graduates is 98.3% during the graduation season and 100% by the end of the graduation year.</p>
