R27: should we add the sensor category to reflect the indications in the former Excel spreadsheet #49

In the Excel spreadsheet "New Argo Reference Tables", sheet SENSOR_MODEL [27], there is an indication of the type of sensor for R27 that I feel is missing on the NVS. Should we add a link to indicate which category it belongs to ?
The actual categories are the following:

  • Conductivity/temperature
  • Oxygen
  • Pressure
  • Near Surface conductivity and temperature
  • Spectrophotometers
  • Transmissometers
  • pH sensor
  • radiometer
  • Backscatteringmeters and Fluorometers combination
  • Others (Accoustic ?)

Thanks for proposing this @delphinedobler. Do you think R27 - R25 mappings could cover this?

It is quite a tempting idea to use R25 for the mapping. However, R25 is sometimes a little more specific than the 10 categories listed above and there is no injectivity of the mapping (i.e. there is not only one R25 entry for each R27 entry) : e.g.:

  • R25 CTD_PRES and STS_CNDC that can be applied to the same sensor_model
  • the several wavelength indications in R25, that refer to one sensor_model ...

@delphinedobler @vpaba I think that the best candidate for the type of categorisation you want for the content of R27 would be to use concepts from L05.

Thanks Gwen, It sounds great. I tried to map all our entries:

category => L05 entry ; comment

Thanks @delphinedobler. L05 could be a good candidate I think as well.

A few additional comments:

(Just a note in case it helps: by clicking on individual concepts, a concept-specific web page opens which also shows all the mappings for that concept under 'Broader' and 'Narrower'. For the scope of this discussion, L22 mappings under 'Narrower' can be particularly useful to look at, as L22 and R27 are similar collections (L22 is a collection of measuring devices, like R27 except the latter is like a subset for Argo sensors only)).

For the "near-surface" conductivity and temperature, yes, I think that http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/350/ would be the best fit. It was also used as a broad term to Surface T,S underway measurements and Subsurface T,S measurements found in the C77 vocabulary which is a vocabulary used for ship-based activity and measurement types. So it would be consistent with the alignment we made elsewhere.

Thanks for your additionnal comments @gwemon @vpaba . I don't know why I missed transmissometers when I first searched. Indeed, entry # 124 corresponds to this kind of sensor.

Let's wait for other comments, but mapping with L05 entries seems to fit our need.

I think this should be on hold until this ADMT ticket is resolved: #141
