OneKeePass is very good, bugs and suggestions

OneKeePass is the best password manager I have used in the past 15 years. I tried 5 to 10 other applications the past 5 years. I want to describe where I come from first. I used 1password for over 10 years until they became dumb so I switched to KeePassXC for 5 years. For 5 years I have tried to find a good replacement for KeePassXC. Because KeePassXC lacks a few features I need. I asked the KeePassXC team to add the feature and they rejected me and they do not seem like friendly people. OneKeePass has the feature already so OneKeePass is great. I wanted to share some small bugs and recommendations. And I hope the OneKeePass team is friendly and receptive to the community.

The auto-type feature is brilliant, functions pretty good. I hope this evolves to be more of a one-click type of feature. So I don't have to click in the menu and then click a second time to send. Maybe add a 3rd option so feature has a way to send automatically. I bet you are already working on this. I really hate the way the KeePassXC browser plugin functions needing to be refreshed redetect constantly so I hope you do not ever go that route.

The edit menu is visible when nothing is selected. For example when all databases are closed the edit menu is visible. It feels strange and bad.

The form field graphics is bad because there needs to be space on the left and ride sides of the typing cursor.

The application icon is ugly on macos. Fix the icon so it matches other standard macos icons.

The enter key does not function when you create a new database. Instead of pressing the next button you should be able to press the enter key on the computer keyboard. Same for creating new entry the enter key also does not function when creating a new entry so I hope this is improved.

I dislike the strange heading "Get Started" it seems low quality compared to other parts of the application. Why is there words there anyway. Maybe it was a placeholder from version 0.1 but I think it should be different.

I don't understand the "quick unlock" button. Why is it not just "unlock" like all the other apps. I think the word quick should be removed or renamed completely, "Open", or "decrypt database", "open password database", I think the 3rd one is best.

The graphic hover in the password generator is outside of the field box when mouse hover is active, which looks bad. Redesign this somehow. Remove the circles maybe so its only a icon hover color change.

I think the password generator needs a insert button when creating a entry. Because currently it says copy for inserting into a new entry. Bad wording to me. So maybe make the entry password generator separate from the password generator in the tools menu because it seems like they should be separate or partly separate.

I am not a fan of the animations when clicking on entries or other parts of the application.

Since entries have a url section there should be a section to set a icon instead of just showing a key icon for every login entry.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to figure out what can be done to improve based one your feedback. Few things may be addressed quickly and few other things may take time to implement.

I implemented the basic auto-type feature only on Mac. I agree that needs improvement.

Still I need to implement this feature for Windows and Linux platforms. Because of platform specific coding and will take more time, I did not pursue further on this.

Using browser extension may solve some of the platform specific issues. But detecting login fields on any website is a challenge!

I will update when I address some of these and your other suggestions

Thank you for this great little app, @jeyasankar.

I've been testing version 0.16.0 on Windows 11.

I really like the look and feel, and the templates. The fact that it can store and access small attachments within the database like KeePass does is a big plus, too. Most other kpdx-based password managers seem not to bother with the attachments.

Not having an auto-type function means it's awkward to use compared with KeePass, though. I don't use a Mac, so don't know how the auto-type function works there, but I find KeePass's auto-type method (which doesn't do automatic detection of login fields in web forms) quite simple and easy to use. I'd be happy with something similar in OneKeePass for Windows.

When/if you're looking to implement auto-type for the Windows version, I'd be happy to beta-test. 🙂

I will add auto-type support for Windows sometime in a later release. Even in mac it is not yet complete. Work on these requires some extensive platform specific implementations for Mac, Window and Linux.

Before that, I am now working on to add the browser extension support so that the platform specific works are minimal. Even then, the browser extension development takes more time than I expected :(

Thanks for the response! Yes, I can see it wouldn't be a simple thing to implement, especially across different OSes. And from my past experience, all coding work always takes longer than expected. ;-)
