Field of view and image circle

One of the key design parameters in a two camera, full 360 degree design is the lens FOV and image circle diameter.

The FOV of the fisheye lens must be at least 190 degrees, preferably 220 degrees in order to achieve adequate overlap at the edges of the field of view.

  • Most fisheye lenses have FOVs in the rang 170-190 degrees
  • Most fisheye lenses have focal lengths of 1mm or greater, and thus image circles of 3.4 - 4 mm
  • A majority of low cost 2MP and above image sensors are in a 1/4" format OV5647 for example. This format has a 2.7mm vertical array height, and is thus requires a custom lens design in order to achieve a full 360 spherical field of view.

Our design utilizes a 1/3" 5MP chip (5.7x4.28mm). A full 360 spherical field of view is achieved using a high quality, 220 degree, 1.17mm focal length with a 3.2mm image circle.

We also list an option for a partial 360 degree field of view utilizing the stock lens of the ELP-USB500W05G USB camera. We will make detail FOV measurements of this configuration, but the approximate FOV is 220 x 170 degrees per camera.
