PartiMOSA system for northern patagonia - Chile

The chilean fisheries service (IFOP) has OpenDrift implemented for their particle tracking system in the chilean inland sea, northern patagonia. The main webpage is

Interesting to see.
The button to start or import a simulation is not active for me, but I guess you need to be logged in to access this?
Did you make your own drifting module (fish eggs or larvae, or other species?) for this purpose?
Are there any aspects of OpenDrift which could be improved, regarding this service?

Hi Knut, to use it you need to:

1. Select a point within the green box (model area)
2. Select a date ("Fecha de simulación")
3. Select the run button ("Calcular")

It takes about 45 seconds.

This page uses the OceanDrift module. We are making a new version with the pelagicegg module, aiming at having configurations (different web pages) for different species.

Right now we are discussing the balance of a webpage with many or few options.

As for OpenDrift improvements, I consider is a great tool, thank you very much to all!. But if I can ask, speed can become an issue, so parallelization is an important goal. That and the particles can strand just after a given time/accumulated celcius degrees.

Ok, I did not understand that I needed to click on the map, as coordinates were already given in the boxes. But now it worked well.

Yes, speed is important for many applications. But very often, the bottleneck is the actual reading of data from ocean model from disk, especially when this is 3-dimensional (plus time). In this case it is little OpenDrift can do to improve the performance. You may see in the log (print o) whether it is this or something else that is the bottleneck.

Deactivating particles after a given time is possible with: o.set_config('drift:max_age_seconds', <time_in_seconds>)

There is no simular feature for degree-days, but this could in fact very easily be added, and would be re-usable to other biological applications. If you want to test an implication yourself, you could try to add an element property degree_days, and then update this one with self.elements.degree_days += self.elements.sea_water_temperature*self.time_step.total_seconds()/86400 within the update method.
