This is a location for developer documentation. For information about how to use Field Book, please see the user documentation.
Field-Book is an open-source Android app for collecting data on field research plots. It is designed to provide a simple yet customizable digital interface for entering data while navigating between different plots and traits. By replacing paper or digital spreadsheets, it eliminates the need for data transcription and it reduces the risk of collection errors. It runs on a wide range of inexpensive hardware, allowing consumer-grade technology to be used in environments where cost and inflexibility have been limiting factors.
Field-Book App started in 2012 as a wheat breeding tool, developed by Trevor Rife in the Poland Lab at Kansas State University. In the decade since it has steadily added fixes and features with the help of a large community of contributors, testers and translators. It has grown into a versatile phenotyping tool used by thousands of researchers across dozens of crops. The core team of developers now work in the Rife Lab at Clemson University, with the larger community of contributors spread around the globe. New contributors are always welcome, not just in the Field-Book project itself but also its other companion Phenoapps projects (Coordinate, Intercross, Prospector).
