For new term requests, please provide the following information:

Preferred term label

competitive exclusion between populations

Synonyms

hasBroadSynonym: 'Gause's law'

Textual definition

A community process during which populations of at least two species compete for the same limiting resources, resulting in only one being able to maintain stable size.

Suggested parent term

We suggest a new parent is created: "ecological community process"
Defined similarly to "population process" but with reference to more than one species.

We would create a class for competitive exclusion between two organisms of different species as the unit of this community process, perhaps in GO under competition with other organism or in ECOCORE.

I'm happy to add this to PCO, but before I do, we need to decide if ecological community process (and likewise population process are better maintained under PCO or ECOCORE.

Regarding the definition, I think we first need to define competition as a population level process. The GO term for competition with other organism is a subclass of interspecies interaction between organisms, which could be interpreted to be an interaction between two individuals or many. Competitive exclusion only happens in populations.

  1. I am good with community process and population process being in PCO

  2. Can't competition happen between individuals of the same species as well as populations of different species? We should allow for representing both.

The more I think about it, the more I think all competition terms should be in the same place, i.e., PCO
