I bring this up in Riverscapes/QRAVEPlugin#55 and Eor shut me down. We have to think about what is logical to a user. I know why you are doing it this way. It makes sense to always name the file qris_project.gpkg and it is easier in both QRiS and QRAVE for you to use a standard 'Open File Dialog" and just limit what file extensions or file names it can see and display.
However, I content that neither QRiS or QRAVE are doing what is logical to a user. We have a nice "Name" field in the Create New Project and Edit Project Properties dialog. You already have a strategy for creating a "safe" folder name (e.g. removing spaces and special characters):
Suggestion
Can we make a custom dialog for Open Existing QRiS Project, that is really only allowing users to select a folder that contains in its root a qris_project.gpkg, and when it finds one of those it displays the actual name of the project in that tree. I know what I am asking is a pain in the ass. But we need to think about user experience and what is logical...

Consider carefully naming strategy of projects to use a safe name of the "Project Name" instead of qris_project.gpkg
Custom Project file name instead of qris_project.gpkg
