They are used by users to mark messages as read, and for moderators, well, they are handy for a lot more than that. There's no reason for it to be disabled as default.

I'm talking about a future version, so right now, just the defaults.

Maybe icons wouldn't be so bad if they were an extra rather than replacing checkboxes.
