Paid subscription doesn't notify user

From m4z in the forum:
As a followup of this german thread I setup a paid subscription in my beta forum and it generally worked great, but: the template for notifying the user didn't do anything. No mail was received by the subscribing user. Nothing in ACP Error Log, webserver access and error logs, postgresql log and no mail sent at all according to my mail server logs. Nothing stuck in background tasks. I'm clueless what happened.

Here's the (german) template I used, in case any special characters broke sending the mail:

Abo erfolgreich!
Hallo {NAME},

du hast erfolgreich das Test-Abo abgeschlossen und solltest nun einen neuen Bereich im Forum sehen können.

I'll try to re-test this in a couple of days with a bit of debug code in place (and once I convice my girlfriend to spend another Euro on me). ;)

Edit: Sorry, I'm using 2.1 (commit 50dc257 from 2019-10-10).

Don't think so, since I know of that issue I have the colon removed from my beta forum title, and only re-entered it during the tests. (I could have mentioned that to make it clear though, thanks for reminding me. 😉 )

paypal has a sandbox that allows for testing without the need to shovel money around (and the possibility of frozen accounts)

I really don't think this is a 2.1.0 requirement. Could we remove or change the milestone?

I'm currently unable to test this (I can't upgrade this forum instance because some mods I need aren't available for 2.1rc4, and setting up a new forum to reproduce is a lot more work for me (working on that))
