Support for KSTAR BluE-S 5000D #150

Hi all,

First of all, thank you all for this component and all the efforts you make to get all those hardware working with HA.

I recently got installed some solar panels, with a battery and inverter KSTAR BluE-S 5000D .

The inverter comes with the solarman app, so I naturally got to this repo. Looking at the inverter status page, I can see that it has a serial number 2355xxxxxx, with the firmware version LSW3_15_1216_1.06. However, none of the lookup files seem to work.

I have asked the company KSTAR information about its modbus protocol, with no luck yet.

Has anyone got this inverter, know anything about it, or know any way of reverse engineer the protocol?

I have exactly the same inverter, I spent a couple of hours over the Christmas holidays getting random sets of data from the inverter and trying to match them to known data from the web API, but I didn't get very far. I'll try and email the manufacturers as well, I'll update here if I get a response.

Hi Daire, it's nice to find a fellow owner of the inverter, so we can share out efforts.

I didn't get any response from the company about the protocol, so I started trying to reverse engineer the modbus registers. Looking at the https://github.com/jmccrohan/pysolarmanv5 repo, a library for accessing modbus endpoints, I tweaked a bit one of the example scripts so I could get the list of registers that are accessible. And after many hours probing the datalogger, I got the following list of registers:

Input registers: 3000 to 3660
Holding registers: 3200 to 3237

With that in hand, I wrote another script to access those registers every minute, and create CSV files for each day. Plotting some of the days, and comparing the charts with those synced to the Solarman site (https://home.solarmanpv.com/plant/infos/device), I think I was able to identify some of the parameters that the integration needs.

However, as I'm off home for a number of days and can't access the inverter to test it, I'm working totally offline at the moment. In case you want to try, I've been updating some of the inverter definition files with the data I think the KSTAR should use, but not sure it even will work.

As you will see, there are many pending things to be filled, as I just took a inverter definition that I found had more or less all the needed parameters, and started replacing them one by one. Still a lot to fill, though.

Cool, I'll have to fire up my code again when I get the chance. One of my problems was that I was doing it at night, so I didn't have a lot of good live solar data to compare :-D

Hi Francisco and Daire, I also have the same inverter (KSTAR BluE-S 5000D) and the same firmware (LSW3_15_1216_1.06) with the serial number 2352xxxxxx. I installed with the custom_parameters.yaml containing the yaml code Francisco attached.

I also added these lines in configuration.yalm

I think it's normal. I don't see it either. However, it seems that someone collaborated to add it to the integration. It's in a pull request that is already merged. I suppose that in next version we'll have the chance to see it in the configuration.

That would be nice. There are many entities appearing in the Solarman page that are missing in the integration. What I currently miss the most is the current power values (AC Power R/U/A, Battery Power, Total DC Input Power... basically the values with units W or kW). Something like it's shown in the Solarman home page, that I'd like to have also in Home Assistant:

That's the problem: there is no documentation. We'd need the modbus protocol specification for this inverter, directly from the manufacturer. I already asked them but got no response. If we could get it, it would be relatively simple to complete all the entities.

As we don't have it, I tried to reverse engineer the data. I created a couple of scripts to help me do it. I don't know if you are a tech guy or not, but if you are, here is what I used to identify the entities.

The first script is a logger: it connects to the inverter, retrieves the data and writes it to a CSV file (one per day). I made this based on the example scripts in the repo https://github.com/jmccrohan/pysolarmanv5. It's in Python, but I'm not proficient in that language at all, so it fails from time to time. For example, I see that if HomeAssistant is pulling data while the script is also running, it fails more frequently, so I have to stop HA in order to run the script. You need to leave it running for some days, depending on if it's a sunny day or not, so you have proper data to compare.

The script need to run in the pysolarmanv5 repo, as it uses the libraries defined in it. Just replace the SERIAL and ADDRESS constants with the ones of your inverter.

Just go https://home.solarmanpv.com/plant/infos/device, select one of the days you have retrieved the data, and click on the Export button of the Historical Data section. That will give you an Excel file. Export it to .csv and place it in the examples/inverter_data/solarman/ directory. Then change the days you want to compare in the ruby script, for example Solarman::RegisterIdentifier.new('20230212', '20230213', '20230214)`, and run it.

It then compares one dataset with the other, trying to identify which register is which Solarman metric. Some metrics are easy to match, some are not, some days are easy, some are not.

As I'm not a data scientist, matching the data is very manual and with many heuristics. For example, it tries to detect unsined vs signed values, to identify the rule as defined in https://github.com/StephanJoubert/home_assistant_solarman/blob/main/customization.md#parameter-item, but for multi-register values it's a manual thing. For example, I think that Cumulative Energy Purchased is an unsigned 32 bit value (rule 3) from the registers [ 3115, 3114 ] (register 3114 is read after 3115), but the script only detects the register 3115.

Previously I wrote another Python script to draw the retrieved data, that may help too. I used it at first, before the ruby script, but it was very time consuming to match the charts with the Solarman charts. Again, I'm not a python guy, so I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to draw the data, and how to exclude some meaningless data, so it can be improved a lot.

Hi, I thought it was complex but not that much! Unfortunately I'm not a programmer and I find it hard to understand!
Try to follow my idea. For example: registers from 3002 to 3011 are not read in the custom_parameters.yaml script. If I put code in Yalm to create entities that read the following registers;

Yes, that is certainly an option. That's more or less what I tried to do first, but with the draw script, as I could look at the raw data more easily. However, I found that it's harder to identify some curves. Some are very similar, others are similar but with different units, others are all 0, etc... About rule 3, I think the registers must be, so it's not [3002, 3003], but [3003, 3002] (that's about indianness). But yes, it's worth a try.

Regarding the ranges, I saw that the datalogger is replying to the range 3000 to 3660 for input registers (data) and to the range 3200 to 3237 for holding registers (state), but does not mean that all those registers have a meaning. I saw that many of them are all 0, but I don't know if that is right or it's just an unused register. If we could get the modbus specification for the inverter, that would be defined in it. The tree ranges in the yaml file are the ranges I needed to cover all registers that I currently use. There is a limitation in how modbus works, and that is that you can't request more than 125 registers at once. If you try to do it, you'll get an error. So, I created as many ranges I needed, with less than 125 registers each.

Regarding reading/writing, that's the mb_functioncode purpose: 4 for reading input registers, 3 for reading holding registers. For writing, we'd need a different modbus function code.

Hi Ok I got it! Yes, I noticed that the numbers must be reversed for 32 Bits (role 3). The combinations of the registers are thousands more with the limitation of 125..... But are we sure that we only read the data and are not going to change them in any way?

I notice registers 3314, 3317, 3318; Self Consume Enable, Start Time, End Time.

Is this correct or a typo? I don't see such things on the menu screen on my inverter. Just Self Consume, Peak Shift and Battery Priority. There are start and end times for peak shifting but not for self consume.

If it is possible to set times for self consumption then I would be interested in setting these as my inverter does some odd things between midnight and sunrise when in self consumption mode.

I have a Hiconics inverter which is a rebrand of the KSTAR-BluE-S 5000D.

im wondering if any of you kind people can help me get Set up with home assistant? Primarily I just require this for the remote control element but I have no idea which port to connect to on the inverter nor what I need to connect to the port.

I am completely lost.
