CSA Retrospective: Big Six Modules & Lesson Condensing

Author: Travis Callow
Project: Big Six Learning Modules (reQUESTers ecosystem)
Period: This Trimester

Overview

This retrospective documents my work on the Big Six modules, a condensed and interactive version of the main lesson modules. My primary focus was simplifying complex content, preserving the strongest interactive elements, and improving backend lesson structure to create a clearer and more engaging learning experience.

Rather than expanding lessons with additional content, my goal was to refine and condense existing material so that each Big Six module captured the most effective learning components while remaining short, focused, and interactive.

Key Contributions

  • Created the Big Six modules as concise, interactive lesson experiences
  • Condensed and simplified approximately half of the existing modules
  • Helped format backend lesson structures
  • Contributed to the creation of a backend lesson
  • Participated in ideation and planning of the junk file with Alex Rubio

1. Big Six Module Creation

Problem Statement

The original lesson modules contained valuable content but were often lengthy and dense, which made it difficult for users to stay engaged and quickly understand core concepts. Important interactive elements were sometimes buried within large blocks of information.

Solution: Big Six Modules

The Big Six modules were designed as streamlined versions of the full lessons. Each module focuses on the most important concepts while retaining the best interactive components to keep users engaged.

Contributions

  • Built Big Six modules that act as concise versions of full lesson content
  • Identified and preserved the strongest interactive elements from each lesson
  • Ensured each module remained focused, clear, and easy to follow

2. Backend Lesson Formatting & Development

Objective

Improve lesson structure and readability on the backend to support better organization and future expansion.

Contributions

  • Helped format backend lessons for consistency and clarity
  • Assisted in the development of one backend lesson
  • Improved organization to make lessons easier to manage and update

3. Module Condensing & Content Simplification

Problem

Several modules were overly long, repetitive, or included unnecessary details that reduced clarity and user engagement.

Solution

I condensed content while maintaining learning objectives and interactivity.

Contributions

  • Simplified approximately half of the existing modules
  • Removed redundant or unnecessary content
  • Focused each module on its strongest instructional and interactive elements
  • Improved clarity and flow for users

4. Ideation & Junk File Planning

Objective

Support organization and future cleanup by contributing to early planning discussions.

Contributions

  • Collaborated with Alex Rubio on ideating the junk file
  • Contributed ideas for organizing unused or outdated content
  • Helped think through long-term maintainability and structure

5. Reflection & Learnings

Technical Skills Developed

  • Backend lesson organization
  • Content condensing without losing instructional value
  • Identifying high-impact interactive elements
  • Modular lesson design

Soft Skills Developed

  • Team collaboration and communication
  • File and project organization
  • More structured ideation processes
  • Improved development organization and efficiency

6. Self-Assessment

Self Grade: 0.88 / 1.0

Justification

My work focused on refining and strengthening existing content rather than adding unnecessary complexity. The Big Six modules improve clarity, engagement, and usability while maintaining the integrity of the original lessons. By condensing modules and improving backend structure, I helped create a cleaner and more effective learning experience.

The slight deduction reflects that some modules and organizational systems can continue to be refined, but the overall impact and quality of my contributions are strong.
