Discussion about the Sociable status #2186

What I've seen the main issue being risen is that there isn't enough options for being notified and contact sorting for the notification and that if these options were created, it'd be in a much better state |

Hey @Frooxius, I saw in the devlog that you wanted to remove the sociable status, and I'd like to as k some questions about it.
What didn't people like about it? And why don't people want it?
Like what? I haven't heard anything, and the feature from my short usage seems really good.
This I can understand, but... what mark are you trying to hit? I'm assuming this would be somewhere in the gh issue for the feature request? Also, I'm also confused about this: |

With a few minor changes, such as settings for contacts list ordering, extra settings for the notification toast/sound, and changing the defaults for the toast/sound, this feature would not impact users who do not want to interact with it. The only change it would have for them would be a bit of text under the user on the contacts page, and nothing else. However, even with those settings to essentially disable the feature locally, it could still help users with social anxiety, or users who are unsure of which contacts are available to join. |

This seems honestly like a pretty snap decision over a couple of small bits of feedback, and unusually jumpy and prescriptivist for this platform. It's made some bugs with contacts and notifications more visible, and there's some minor settings that need added, but it's a good feature that a bunch of people have wanted and are actively using. |

In my personal opinion, I feel the feature should stay for a couple of reasons (based on my personal short-time experience with it):

I'll simply reiterate here as I have elsewhere: This is a very welcome feature that I was very happy to see added. It may need some tweaking to address rough edges for those that don't like the implementation as-is but it seems misplaced to completely remove it. A clear and simple indication that one is receptive to invitations or contacts joining their session removes a layer of friction to social interaction. For some, a message or invitation request can be a bigger hurdle than it might seem to others. "Sociable" adds a useful layer of clarity. If this is to be removed, I would at least like to see a plan for custom status messages. It would allow users to convey such information with much more flexibility. |

I really don't believe this should be removed either. Adjusted, sure, but not removed! A blue status is a pretty important social feature but one I'm not sure many thought about before it was added today; if you look at VRChat for example, its blue status auto-invites people who send join requests and thus provides the same "hey I'm up to hangout come join me!" sense that Resonite's sociable status currently does. Especially for new users coming to the platform they may very well be looking for a similar status. From what I can see the issues are really just the two ones that others have pointed out: the contacts list sorting as pointed out in issue #2182 and the notification toast and sound from issue #2179 New messages should definitely be sorted above sociable contacts, that's for sure. As for whether sociable and online should be mixed, I'm unsure there and that may warrant more discussion in the issue on it. And as for notifications, I think closing that issue was perhaps a bit hasty and it's worth considering the concerns about the notification some more. It's pretty evident these days that many people HEAVILY dislike being audibly pinged with notifications they don't care for, you can see the drama that occurs whenever people ping everyone in Discord example (this was especially bad during last MMC if you want to check the channel archive for it...) As such I think the notification would go over much better with people if it was visual-only by default, with the sound disabled but an option provided to enable it for those who wish, as I believe the sound aspect is the side that most bothers people who dislike the notifications being defaulted to on. But yeah, please don't remove this feature Froox! It's a lot better to make adjustments to address the concerns some people have than to scrap a feature that others enjoy entirely! |

okay but fr tho. the addition of this feature has me rather neutral. tbh its a nice indicator, but I think tying it to a (default on) notif may have been a bit of an obnoxious move. I might have gone over better if the notif defaulted to off that way ppl dont get jumpscared. as to why Froox thought it needed to be removed for, who knows how long, that is unknown to me. my guess is that it was introduced to the community in a rather obtrusive way, and knowing that ppl in resonite generally like to keep to themselves I think there isn't much chance of re introducing it in a way that will make it stick. I guess Froox was just reading the room with that call. yes, you CAN turn the notif off, but remember that people generally aren't gonna be that observant. (if they were, there would be way less issues overall) |

Even in my initial post on the original issue that led to this feature being added I said a "ping (meaning sound) may be too much" but having the "Anti-Busy" with a clear marker saying "poke me/join me/I want to join people" in game seemed to have been a huge success on platform. (and even more so than just a custom status text would) Resonite hasn't felt this active to me since launch (even if the player count wasn't as high). It may not seem like having a "poke me status" with out a notification is any different from "Online" but socially it very very much is treated differently by everyone, and that difference leads to amazing things. The Sound isn't needed for that same effect to happen. (notification is fine... though it may get in the way at times but that's it's own issue and is a problem even when a lot of your friends all join in at once.) I still liked the notification, popping up while I was working as it reminded me to check my friends lists as I was getting finished with my work going "oh hey friend is up to chat I should meet up as soon as I'm done here" The sound being the same as other sounds also may have exacerbated the issue. I couldn't tone it out as it was the same as an other much more important sound. (A much quieted minor sound would have also helped). but over all in game it felt like a huge success despite this minor issue. I was even tempted to join people I almost never talk to because I'm always worried they are busy (but my world was already flooded with people the moment I turned on the setting and I loved it! despite being an introvert) I honestly feel after experiencing the game with this feature I don't know if I could even go back to not having it. |

i would love to see a custom status feature per user accounts at some point |

I'm guessing there were discussions in game that led to the idea it should be removed because I cannot find them in the discord or here. I think the feature is a good idea but maybe should default to sorting socialabe contacts to the top of the contacts list with an optional notification this way it's easy to tell looking at your list who wants to be joined |

I think most important opinions have been stated, I agree that this should be kept (and maybe a little tweaked). I vehemently disagree with removing features just because there was some push against them without seeking feedback from all sides. However this also kinda highlights the need for better Contacts UI (#1116), and possibly the contact grouping/tagging (#915). Being able to have notification settings per contact group would be amazing, because you probably want to have different notifications for, say, people you hang out with regularly versus some new players you have added just because you have been helping them a bit over a few days or something. |

Yea sociable has too many potential benefits in my opinion to just go and remove it, the flaws can be ironed out and I've always wanted a way at a glance to know if someone I'm friends with is "online" or "available" so please don't get rid of it |

For all the people mentioning that sociable contacts should sort differently and such, I've just updated Flexible Contacts Sorting mod to support the sociable status. You can find it here: https://github.com/ResoniteModdingGroup/FlexibleContactsSort/ - It adds a variety of other neat features to the Contacts page too. As for the status itself: I think people should at the very least get some more time to test it, though the opinions voiced here seem vastly positive, beyond some requests for tweaks, so I don't think it should be removed. |

Hrm. I've unfortunately missed trying this in-game, but I can say that from my perspective, this is a MUCH needed feature that I was really looking forward to trying when I saw the changelog this morning. I've read through a bunch of chatter about it, and I'm... not quite sure what people disliked about it? The only thing I saw was people disliking the notification spam, which was fixed already, and the notification sound, which could just be disabled for now, until a dedicated custom sound is made for it / #1928 is implemented to allow people to change / disable the sound effect themselves. This is a feature that in my eyes could make it much easier for me to join friends in private sessions when I'm not sure if they are busy or not, which could address one of the biggest "problems" Resonite has currently, the feeling of everyone "hiding away" in private sessions. I definitely vote for re-adding this, maybe just with the notification sound disabled for the time being. |

This genuinely just needed more feedback before going live. I feel like custom statuses should be the way to go for this, the status name of sociable does feel like it would imply joinable. Not everyone is going to see the update logs, and some may just ignore it and use the feature to make people more likely to join since it brings them to the top. It playing a noise by default seems like a bad idea, and I'm also pretty perturbed with not having the option for a noiseless toast. Having a setting to disable forcing sociable to the top would also be a good idea. The current implementation feels like a step in the wrong direction, but so does removing it outright. |

Imma repost my message from discord. My two cents here. I couldn't even test the feature out, to even give proper feedback. At least let this new status feature thing run for a week before back tracking on it. There's always the loud minority that's going to complain about anything new. Like even before trying it, the whole sound thing by default was a bad idea to begin with. That should be opt in and I think that's where most of the complaints are coming from. Otherwise I think it's a neat feature to have a status for peeps that want to hangout with others but don't want to message 90% of their contacts that are in a private world. |

I really enjoy the concept of the feature and with some polish it could be a stellar addition to the platform. I think the issue currently is the creator's intention for the feature for how it is to be used and how the community actually uses it so far not lining up. It was stated many times that the intention was for users to set their status to Sociable then receive invites to sessions; particularly private and hidden sessions. Since the feature was added, myself and many people I spoke to (so this is all anecdotal) saw more often:
Those are just issues I heard in my discussions with other users around the feature. I think there are a lot of issues with the feature that need to be tweaked in its programming as well as socially how it's presented to users. Once those are addressed the feature should be pretty much perfect. |

I think the concept of a status that tells people you want to be joined/messaged/invited is great, however the implementation of the Sociable status was not done well. Most people complained about the notification + sound rather than the status itself. I think rather than sending out a notification with sound, it could be just a silent notification like the "user online" one, and you should be able to see it when scrolling the contacts list. This way it doesn't feel too intrusive (silent notification is less likely to bother) and it is something you can check out when you want. This may be better implemented as a kind of custom status too, maybe you can choose from a list of preset moods, or write a custom text status. Then it wouldn't need to send out the notification. |

With a bit more time thinking about it and reading other people's posts, I think this probably doesn't really need a notification at all. Online has a purpose because people actually connecting to the game is useful information, but the other statuses don't have notifications and I think Sociable falls into the same category. It's something useful to know when looking over your friends list but maybe not something you need to know immediately. |

I liked it, please keep it. People complaining about sounds or whatever have the option to turn all of that off |

I think "Sociable" should be divided into "Join me" and "Invite me" statuses, both using the blue color. This coupled with the custom status update coming later would provide all the info you need regarding the status' intent. Right now it can mean pretty much anything and may just add more uncertainty to people feeling shy about reaching out. As for the notifications and the sounds, I suspect as the community grows and the number of notifications/sounds you are receiving starts increasing most users will inevitably have this disabled. As an alternative, I think we could consider enabling notifications and sounds individually per contact, similar to Steam. Another alternative would be favorites or contact groups, and having your notifications and sounds enabled for anyone in the groups. This could probably work with a per contact setting as well. |

Please keep Sociable. IMO it would still be fine if it wouldn't generate notifications by default and wouldn't affect contact list sorting. Is it really an issue if changing those two things makes it slightly different than what the designer originally intended? This would lead to most people being happy and I don't see any real issues arising from doing these two changes. It would lead to less discoverability? Yea true, but we shouldn't let perfect be the enemy of good. |

I still stand that this should be changed and better implemented. Split them into Join me/Join or invite/Invite me to show intent for sociable, and maybe even set the process to be timed. Mix the blue in with the contacts like how the headless servers mixed before we shifted to Resonite. I have given plenty of feedback an replied to most all on #2184 It staying blue is not good with the bug of people goin offline and online like on user had last night causing a ping of them being sociable every 5-45 minutes, so #2191 would be a good improvement #2181 can be helpful as well. And #2179 makes good points as well I recommend people look though each of these and many mor to add key points to this discussion |

split them as others have suggested. add option to both change and disable the audible portion. |

I think the notification should have a button on it to mute the sociable notification for this user or for all, or just text let the user know they have options. I found the notifications to be a huge relief because I finally know who is likely to accept a join request. I think there should be an option to set a custom notification sound or use a softer sound, so it's easier to ignore but still there. There was one person on my contacts list whos sociable notification was constantly going off, but this was the same behavior as always for them, except it had originally been "user is online". Would it be possible for a user to check if they are spamming notifications somehow? This could be just as useful as the "listen to your mic" feature when selecting the audio device. |

-
Removing the feature is not necessary in my opinion, but the notifications should be turned off by default and there should be a question during first setup about whether the user wants them enabled. This strikes a good balance between not annoying existing users with a sudden new source of repeated pings (depending on number of contacts) and informing people about the feature and related settings being available |

I've seen plenty of people on the discord saying why it should be kept, just updated and we wanted to port it here for better visibility
