ends_with changes the characters reaching the database

I'm using Rails 7.1.3.4, sql server 2019, Ransack 4.2.0 and I get the following interesting result when trying to do a range search on a last name column.

[1] pry(main)> search = CallListItem.ransack(
  patient_last_name_starts_with: 'a',
  patient_last_name_ends_with: 'b'
)
puts search.result.to_sql
SELECT [call_list_items].* FROM [call_list_items] LEFT OUTER JOIN [patients] ON [patients].[id] = [call_list_items].[patient_id] WHERE ([patients].[last_name] >= N'a' AND [patients].[last_name] <= N'c')
=> nil

If I type z for the ends_with, I get {
If I type z for the starts_with, I get z (correct)

Any idea what I could be missing?

After not finding any documentation around starts_with/ends_with I looked for more options and found lteq gteq that properly handled it.
