Description of the dataset:

• Audio data collected from a long-term recording mooring off of Jeremy Point in Wellfleet Harbor, Massachusetts.
• Location: 41.896°N, 70.066°W (see xls files for coordinate of each deployment)
• Water depth = 3m.
• Dataset duration: 2014 - present
• Data mostly recorded using SoundTrap recorders (Ocean Instruments, NZ). But a few deployments used a different recorder.
• A xls spreasheet is included with the audio data indicates all metadat for each deployment

Project description:
Wellfleet Harbor is a location where dolphin strandings occur. The dataset was originally collected to detect dolphin presence and support efforts to understand strandings and develop an early warning system for stranding events. For this project, however, our focus shifts to long-term changes in the local soundscape over the past decade. Specifically, we will examine whether (and how) the COVID-19 lockdown altered soundscape conditions, and whether hypoxia events documented in Cape Cod Bay were associated with measurable acoustic changes. A major biological contributor to the soundscape at this site is the chorus produced by cusk eels. We are particularly interested in evaluating whether characteristics of cusk eel vocalizations can serve as an acoustic proxy for hypoxia. To support this analysis, we will pair acoustic data with historical in situ measurements of optical dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll, conductivity, salinity, and temperature collected every 15 minutes by the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Marine Program sensor in Wellfleet Harbor (41.928°N, 70.043°W) at 2.5 m depth.
