Divio has a fantastic bunch of content about how to structure documentation which is used in many places such as the Django docs:

The gist of it is that content needs to be in one of 4 forms or else it'll all blend together and be difficult to understand and maintain:

  • Tutorials
  • How-to Guides
  • Discussions
  • Reference
