Library version, source code and maintenance of geoPHP

Just opening this for discussion.

This module uses geoPHP (1.2), which seems abandoned. At least, there's no activity in its repo on https://github.com/phayes/geoPHP

This gets more urgent, as PHP versions move on.

There are forks, here's a discussion. Note the fork by @itamair, which already includes several fixes relevant for us: https://github.com/itamair/geoPHP

So the question is: should we switch to that version at some point?

Based on this issue backdrop-contrib/geocoder#30 we may not only want to use that fork, but also fork it to allow dynamic properties.

As time passes, this issue gets more urgent. Not critical, yet, but with PHP 8.5 I now get:

Deprecated function: Case statements followed by a semicolon (;) are deprecated, use a colon (:) instead in include_once() (line 15 of .../modules/geofield/libraries/geophp/geoPHP.inc).

I'm still in favor of giving this updated version a try.
Without further modifications, if possible. Given, that maintenance here is mostly "community based"...

It's 2026 and on PHP 8.5 I'm starting to see loads of:

Deprecated function: Case statements followed by a semicolon (;) are deprecated, use a colon (:) instead in include_once() (line 16 of .../geofield/libraries/geophp/geoPHP.inc).

This problem has already been fixed in this fork.

I guess, it's time for some action here. 😉 What do you think, @jenlampton? (Yes, you're maintainer of geofield.)

I fixed the immediate problem (deprecated nagging) by #72, but hesitate to close this issue, as there are more things to consider.
