Reassess export strategy

With fix in 618e679, reassess ef8fa33

Make sure the strategy aligns with the docs and schemas task.

Notes:

• exported types get their own definitions in the schema, and linked pages in the docs
• non-exported types are included where needed, but not separately defined
• so should probably remove the export in certain places
