Grids

Recognize two kinds of grids:

• Fixed: complex layout, needs breakpoints
• Fluid: can be reflowed mechanically

For fixed grids, I say we just use handwritten CSS Grids. Handling column descriptions for various breakpoints will lead to an explosion of utility classes.

For fluid grids:

• 12-columnish grid system: Columns have a minimum width that leads to 12 columns on an average desktop screen.
• Elements have preferred column counts.
• Elements can be expanded beyond their preferred count unless specified otherwise.

I have a partially-figured-out form of this system in my head, it's not clear enough to put into words yet.
