It looks like vterm is a better shell to use from Emacs. Zap ansi-term & multi-term in my config? Notice it affects NixOS config too. The only cons I can see is that vterm has external deps which I'd have to install separately from Spacemacs---not a problem in NixOS but it could be a pain on the Mac.
