Research Task

Use this template to create issues that represent small chunks of work (.5 - 2 days) that stand alone, or represent incremental work as part of an Epic Issue Template.

  • Relevant PR (if applicable):

  • Question or Goal: Review and update as needed the Metabase Training Guide document.
While anticipating the onboarding of new analyst, the Metabase training guide should be reviewed, updated or corrected as needed to ensure the document is still relevant to DDS tasks. Also to ensure the guide is easy to follow for any first time Metabase users.

Updated direction: organize exercises to fit a 5-day training schedule. organize exercises to increasing difficulty

work plan:

  • Mention the official Metabase Getting Started Guide, and use the example Metabase datasets in the beginning of the doc?
  • Organize existing exercises (ex1-11) to a 5-day training schedule (Monday-Friday).
  • Exercise to increase in difficulty through the week. Multiple easy questions can be stacked earlier in the week. End of the week can be 1 difficult question

Order of the exercises by difficulty level still makes sense. This is how I would divide exercises by days:

  • Day 1: Getting Familiar with Metabase (Easy Basic Aggregation)

    • Exercise 1: Following through the tutorial. Counting organizations and services by Caltrans district (Basic aggregation and joins)
    • Exercise 2: Counting services managed by organizations, grouped by county and district (Simple aggregation and grouping by district)
  • Day 2: Aggregating Data and Filtering (Medium Difficulty)

    • Exercise 3: Identifying the most popular vendors used by organizations (Multiple joins, grouping by vendor, counting services)
    • Exercise 4: Finding organizations passing RT feed guidelines (Filtering by specific checks and pass/fail status)
    • Exercise 5: Calculating percentage of passing and failing guideline checks per day
  • Day 3: Complex Joins and Aggregations (Advanced Difficulty)
    - Exercise 6: Average trips per day of the week for a specific organization
    - Exercise 7: Counting organizations based on NTD reporter type and Caltrans district (has multiple joins, grouping, counting organizations)
    - Exercise 8: Counting organizations with unique routes (multiple joins, filtering by date, counting)

  • Day 4: Final Exercises with Advanced Joins and Filtering (Advanced Difficulty)
    - Exercise 9 Part1 and Part2: Counting organizations currently operating fixed routes (Filtering by current status)
    - Exercise 10: Breakdown of modes that services or organizations use by district

  • Day 5: Creating Dashboard
    - Exercise 11: Creating Dashboard, Going back to previous exercise to figure out alternative methods.
    - Extra Questions

Note: Day 3 and Day 4 are a bit packed. My suggestion is to extend it to 6 days instead of 5, so that we can allocate Exercise 7 and Exercise 8 to Day 4, and Exercise 5 and Exercise 6 to Day 3.
