optimise-images.sh added new benchmark mode option to test against preset sample images as well as support for alternative PNG compressor to OptinPNG, ZopfliPNG and alternative JPG compressor to JpegOtim, Google Guetzli and Mozilla MozJPEG. You can jump straight to the summary here and all the original and resized/optimised images can be found here.

Usage options:

./optimise-images.sh

Explained

There are 4 benchmark modes all of which saves the preset sample images to working image directory defined by BENCHDIR='/home/optimise-benchmarks'. So default location to for images is set to /home/optimise-benchmarks. There's a 3rd paramater for all which sets TESTFILES_MINIMAL='n' to download all sample images instead of default TESTFILES_MINIMAL='y' which downloads a smaller minimal set of png and jpg images (4 of each).

  • optimise-images.sh {bench} - this is default image optimisation mode, download preset sample image list, profile it, optimise it and re-profile it
  • optimise-images.sh {bench-compare} - enables Compare Mode
  • optimise-images.sh {bench-webp} - enables WebP conversion support
  • optimise-images.sh {bench-webpcompare} - enables WebP conversion + Compare Mode

For this example will be testing bench-webpcompare mode but with all compressors enabled. This will give you a break down of original image, the resized to MAXRES=2048 and optimised versions for png, jpg and webp. You can jump straight to the summary here and all the original and resized/optimised images can be found here..

bench-webpcompare auto enables IMAGICK_WEBP='y' but if you want to do this on your own directory defined path, you need to se IMAGICK_WEBP='y' yourself too.

Run bench-webpcompare command mode:

./optimise-images.sh bench-webpcompare

This will first download the minimal set of sample images to /home/optimise-benchmarks

Interestingly, MozJPEG via jpegtran seems to convert jpgs to progressive jpgs with Interlace = JPEG reported when I enable PROFILE_EXTEND='y' to report additional image information like transparency color, background color and interlaced value. And for png24-interlaced-image1.png original image, all the resized and optimised copies lost their interlace value = None. So will need to tweak my script.
