An online friend recently told me that they are coming to San Francisco for a week and asked for some suggestions of things to do.
I figured the best way to handle this would be to outsource it as well as create a github repo so that anyone can improve the list. So if you know of something cool and don't see it on here please add it or if you see something wrong fix it (and don't forget to add yourself to the contributors list).

The Bay Lights is the world’s largest LED light sculpture, 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high. Inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary, its 25,000 white LED lights are individually programmed by artist Leo Villareal to create a never-repeating, dazzling display across the Bay Bridge West Span through 2015.

Kiss Seafood in Japantown is the best of many good sushi options within the city. It requires a reservation, usually several days in advance, and is relatively expensive, but worth it if you're looking for someplace special. The special omakase is the best way to go - several courses of very creative Japanese food - sushi, sashimi, chawan mushi, etc.
O-Toro Sushi in Hayes Valley is another great option at a lower price point, but with a fantastic selection of fresh fish.

San Francisco has several nice cafes. Some of the better known and more popular ones are listed below.
Blue Bottle Coffee has espresso drinks, press pot, pour-over, and (in some locations) siphon coffee. Locations include the Ferry Building, SF MoMA museum, Mint Plaza, and their original stand in Hayes Valley.
Four Barrel in the Mission neighborhood serves espresso drinks, and pour-over coffee. Their single-origin espresso/pour-over station (open limited hours each day) has several freshly roasted selections to choose from. They intentionally provide no wifi, as they want to encourage conversation and interaction.
Ritual Coffee, with locations in the Mission, Hayes Valley, and the Flora Grubb garden shop, serves espresso and pour-over drinks, and provides free wifi access if you're looking to get a little work done on-the-go.
The Temple is my favorite club in the city. There are multiple floors with multiple rooms and multiple vibes. Very cool spot.

Multiple times weekly there is a huge farmers market at the ferry building. Prepared and raw food as well as street performers and music.
Marin County is home to Mt. Tamalpais.
Santa Cruz is about an hour and a half south of San Francisco.
