Any Updates on the Full Release of Chisel 7? #4716
-
Hi everyone, I’ve been a longtime user of Chisel and really appreciate the amazing work this project brings to the hardware design community. I’ve noticed that Chisel 7 has had two milestone releases so far (v7.0.0-M1 and v7.0.0-M2), with the latest one on July 16, 2024. Like many in the community, I’m super excited about the full release of Chisel 7! Could the development team or anyone in the know share an update on the progress toward the Chisel 7 full release? Is there a rough timeline, or are there specific features/fixes still being worked on before it’s ready? I totally understand that open-source development can have its own pace due to various factors—I’m just eager to learn more about the release time. |

Howdy and thanks for the question! We really need to do better about more frequent releases. This question motivated some discussion during today's developer's meeting and here's what we came up with: For Chisel 7, the remaining features are:
It's not that much work really, just need to focus. Looking forward, it's clear that we need to adopt a more frequent release cadence. I need to write this up more formally and put it in the README, but in short, after 7.0.0, we're going to try doing more frequent releases off of main (rather than backporting to stable branches). This will likely increment the major version a lot more frequently, but it will be much easier for users to track the development of Chisel. |
