Upgrading from a very old version of hugo-clarity

It seems that my hugo-clarity theme was installed in December 2020, and has never been upgraded. However, I'm having difficulty installing the new version, maybe because I can;t quite work out what I need to do to simply upgrade the theme, without wrecking my site. Ordinarily, I'd simply do

git clone https://github.com/chipzoller/hugo-clarity/

from my site directory (my OS is Arch Linux), but this is warned against in the README, as there's likely to be some confusion with the example site. This would be my preferred method, as it seems the easiest.

For Hugo modules, I'm not clear which of all the instructions are needed simply to upgrade the theme.

I can't use git submodules, as the command

git submodule add https://github.com/chipzoller/hugo-clarity themes/hugo-clarity

gives me the error:

fatal: 'themes/hugo-clarity' already exists in the index  

Unfortunately my knowledge of git and its workings is negligible, so I've no idea how to overcome this, without wrecking anything else.

So I'm both stuck, and confused. Any help or advice would be very welcome - thank you!

Sorry about your predicament. I can look into this for you. Is your repo public?

Thank you, no my repo isn't public, in fact it doesn't even exist; everything runs from my VPS. (I did have a repo once, but an ill-configured git command, because of my lack of understanding, meant I lost everything.) I just wanted some advice. I have the usual Hugo setup: in my blog directory I have configuration files (I'm now using hugo.toml which I believe is recommended), and directories for the blog content, for public and static files, and for themes. Each theme has been imported using something like

git clone https://github.com/maintainer/theme/

and then it gets left alone. With hugo-clarity, I did make a few changes to the math.html file in the layouts/partials directory so as to better achieve the typesetting effects I wanted.

However, the current instructions, though no doubt perfect for everybody else, have confused me. I've never used modules (I've never even used shortcodes; all my Hugo work has been with the excellent ox-hugo importer from Emacs org-mode.)

In particular, consider the description (in its README file) of how to install hugo-clarity with Hugo modules; there are two examples of installing, starting with wget -O; there are four commands chained together with &&. Underneath, there is a brief description of what to do if you already have a site. But I don't understand this - what command or commands am I supposed to do first? Do I use git clone, or wget?

It may be that I'm making very heavy weather over a minor issue, and as I say my fallback position is a git clone of the hugo-clarity repo into my themes directory.
