Develop code-server locally #2516

Hello I try to get familiar with the project and want to work with it locally so I forked the project made a few changes and then I run yarn build after the successful build I typed in the terminal (project root of fork) code-server but all I get is error Please specify at least one file or folder

What exactly did I miss here? Thanks

I suggest using the command yarn watch to build both code-server and vscode on changes and run it, while yarn build only builds code-server. However to run it, you don't run the code-server command. That command uses an installation of code-server in the path, thus the error message. Instead you should run node out/node/entry.js, since you haven't released the packages and installed it.

When I run node out/node/entry.js in the project I get Please specify at least one file or folder

I managed now to run it but in the terminal I get

Sorry for not responding. Try looking at the doc. This probably means it hasn't built VSCode. Commands like yarn watch automatically build it, however I assume you can manually build it at ci/build/build-vscode.sh or by running tsc in the root of lib/vscode. You would have to do this before running the entry file.

Thanks, before I run the yarn watch do I need to run yarn in root and in lib/vscode to install both?

@JammSpread I'm really unsure what the problem here is I just want to develop locally like a website and see results in the browser. Has this maybe something to do with WSL 2? All yarn watch gives me is this error. (I use WSL 2)

I cloned the repo with git clone is this ok?

Hmm, it seems to me like you are missing a lot of things. Do you mind resetting your local repo?

Def agree with trying a reset, and make sure you're on latest master. From a fresh repository all you need is:

yarn
yarn watch

Run from the root.
