When you have to write formal documents like theses or seminar papers, not only the content matters.
Such works also have to conform with certain style rules.
The guidelines for \enquote{correct formatting} presented here are a mix of general formatting guidelines and rules that should be followed when you write a thesis with our group.
General formatting rules that hold for most scientific texts in the field of computer science and mathematics are marked with a dark blue square $\color{CD02}\largeblacksquare$.
The second subset of rules is marked with a light blue square $\color{CD03}\largeblacksquare$ and better described as a \enquote{matter of (styling-)taste}, but should be followed for theses with our group.
However, those may not apply for theses written with other groups.

\lightsq{Capitalize Headings} For headings, use the title case, which is also used in this document.
Capitalize the first letter of every word, except for words like \enquote{a}, \enquote{and}, \enquote{of}, \enquote{the}, \enquote{with}, etc.

\lightsq{Abstract Length} The abstract should contain approximately 250--300 words.
\darksq{Paragraph Length} In your document, each paragraph should contain at least two or three sentences.
\darksq{Chapter Structure} A chapter should start with an {\color{CD02}introduction} and end with a short {\color{CD02}summary}. In the introduction you motivate your chapter and should shortly recap the most important points that are needed to understand the following content. In the summary you formulate the key findings of your chapter.
\lightsq{Page Structure} Make sure your reader does not get lost in your document. Therefore, do not write more than one page of text without a new paragraph heading (or chapter, section, or subsection).

\darksq{Protected Spaces (and Abbreviations)} If you have the need to abbreviate words like \enquote{etc.}, always put a \highlight{protected space} \enquote{\texttt{\textbackslash \ }} after the full stop to prevent it from being treated as end of the sentence, which may visually increase the space after.
In block-aligned texts, \LaTeX \ often uses the space after a full stop to stretch a line with fewer characters, resulting in an oddly large gap after abbreviated characters.
But even knowing how to prevent this behaviour, it is best to limit abbreviations to a bare minimum.
Especially in the case of \enquote{etc.}, it is strongly recommended that you give two more examples instead of using it.

There are two options to add references to your text: Either you integrate it into the sentence, which is usually done by naming the author(s) (last name only) followed by a reference, or you leave out the author names, only keeping the reference.

There are different scientific publication types, which must be referenced appropriately.
\lightgreysq{Conference Paper} A conference paper was accepted at a scientific conference.
The conference has a name and usually a specific abbreviation, e.g.\ the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC).
Since conferences take place annually or bi-annually, the year is also given.
%Before a paper is accepted, it undergoes a double blind peer review process.
%At the conference, the author usually either gives a presentation or presents her/his work in a poster.
After the conference, the paper is published in a designated book, the \emph{conference proceedings}.
This book has a title, which is often very generic (such as \enquote{Computer Vision}).
Thus, the usual way to reference the proceedings (abbreviated \enquote{Proc.}) is by the name of the conference and the year, e.g.\ \enquote{Proc.\ British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC), 2018}.
To reference a conference paper, use the BibTex entry type \highlight{InProceedings}. Make sure to provide the \highlight{author}, \highlight{year} (no month necessary), \highlight{title} (paper title) and \highlight{booktitle} (conference proceedings title) fields.
It is common to use \enquote{Proc.\ <conference name> (<conference abbreviation>)} as a booktitle.
Additionally, you should provide the \highlight{publisher} and the \highlight{pages}, where the paper can be found in the proceedings, if possible.
Examples are given by \cite{SintelButler2012,Maurer2018a}.

\lightgreysq{Journal Paper} Journal papers are related to conference papers, but are published in a scientific journal.
Usually, they consist of more pages than a conference paper.
Since journals publish in a non annually cycle, apart from the year, the journal volume and number must be given.
To reference journal papers, use the BibTex entry type \highlight{Article} and provide the \highlight{author}, \highlight{title}, \highlight{journal}, \highlight{volume}, \highlight{number} and \highlight{year} fields.
Also provide the \highlight{pages} field if possible.
An example journal paper can be found in~\cite{Zimmer2011}.
\lightgreysq{PhD Thesis} A PhD thesis is a book, which is a result of the years of research as a PhD student.
To reference a PhD thesis, use the BibTex entry type \highlight{PhdThesis} and provide the \highlight{author}, \highlight{title}, \highlight{year} and \highlight{school} (university name) fields.
See \cite{Maurer2019} as an example.
\lightgreysq{Book} A book should be referenced using the BibTex entry type \highlight{book} with the fields \highlight{title}, \highlight{year}, \highlight{author} and \highlight{publisher}.
Also the \highlight{volume} should be given if possible.
A book is referenced in~\cite{Weickert1998}.
\lightsq{Capitalization in Titles} Capitalize the titles of books and PhD theses in title case, as described for chapter titles in Section~\ref{sec:generalformatting}.
The titles of conference and journal papers should in general not be capitalized, except for the first letter. An exception to this are fixed names or abbreviations (e.g.\ \enquote{CNN} or Fourier).

\darksq{ArXiv papers}
ArXiv.org is a publishing server, where everyone can upload pdf files.
Thus, there is no scientific review process involved.
In general, papers should not be cited from there.
Sometimes authors upload preliminary versions of their papers to an arXiv server, which are then findable through search engines. Most of the times, however, the paper is already reviewed and published in a scientific context.
An example is the ProFlow paper \cite{Maurer2018a} that is sometimes wrongly cited with the ArXiv version, or more recently RAFT \cite{RAFT}.
\darksq{Author names}
Make sure the author names are consistently handled in the bibliography, i.e.\ consistently abbreviate the first name and stick to the order \enquote{<first name> <last name>}.
List all authors in the correct order and don't use the \enquote{et al.}-abbreviation in the bibliography.
