What is ckanext-requestdata?

This extension introduces a new type of dataset in which access to data is by request. The dataset's metadata is published and searchable but it has no resources - no files are uploaded in the CKAN filestore and there are no URL links to externally hosted files.

When a logged in CKAN user requests the data in the dataset, the maintainers are alerted and one of them can decide to accept or decline the request. These actions are performed in the maintainer's dashboard.

Conversations between the requester and maintainer are purposely not recorded; only the information needed for dashboard statistics is stored ie. requested, replied, declined, shared. Organization and system administrators have overview dashboards."

Why use ckanext-requestdata?

  • Make others aware that your data is available
  • Publish dataset metadata without uploading a file(s)
  • Once a user requests access, publishers can decide exactly what to share
  • Data may contain personal identifiable information
  • You may need to restrict access to sensitive data

How users request resources from a metadata only dataset

For a metadata-only dataset, instead of a data resources being made accessible, users can indicate their interest to the dataset maintainer by choosing “Request Data”.

Dataset maintainers receive a request notification after an interested user has entered their contact details and request, detailing why they would like to access the data.

Maintainers are notified by email, as well as an alert through the UI.

Where can maintainers manage metadata only dataset requests?

There are seperate user, organization and admin dashboards from where maintainers can accept or decline requests.
