Whole split view in a tab bar contoller?

Any thoughts on the best way to promote the tab bar to the top of the food chain? I need a long tab bar, visible in both portrait and landscape, that handles switching out core functions of the app. Right now I browbeat several stock split views into one tab bar, and have to muscle the controller-switching with inelegant code. I really like the prospect of NavigatorKit and url handling, but from the looks, thisnsort of change is non-trivial.

You can see part of the inherent problem now when running the NavigatorCatalog demo app under iPad. Getting UITabBar to behave correctly under the iPad UI Idiom with a split view, either the MGSplitViewController derived class in NavigatorKit or with UISplitViewController is real PITA. The deeper I looked into it, it seems that the More View Controller idiom is hard coded to a very specific set of user interface metrics that split views muck with. This is, in part, a reason I started rolling my own Tab Bar at the end of last year and posted as TabBarKit in January.

I think I have demo of making UITabBarController behave as the top level controller and will try to dig it up and post it with some updates I have for building under Xcode 4.
