I'm not sure how to describe this, but in a nutshell, the key bound to ddterm-toggle-hotkey is being repeated (outputted?) indefinitely after ddterm is toggled to hidden, see below.
This message seems to be related:
gnome-shell[20716]: Key repeat discarded, Wayland compositor doesn't seem to be processing events fast enough!
