Better Places Management

I'm currently running reitti and Google timeline simultaneously to see how well reitti works. It's pretty nice actually!
The biggest reason I haven't spent much time in reitti yet though is that the list of detected places in settings is 100 pages long with no filters or search capabilities. This makes it very inconvenient to actually assign proper names to known places.

i feel you that is cumbersome at the moment. I will add a search field to the places page, this should help a lot.

I normally edit the place name directly on the timeline. At least for me, that is the best place to do it. There I have the most context around the place.

Oh thanks for that! I did not know I could edit the place from the timeline, but that makes a lot of sense.

What about a way of merging places that are in essence the same place, but for whatever reason appear as multiple close locations?

Hi @quiggles, the next release will contain the possibility to attach an area to a place instead of only the point and a radius.

Here is a sneak peak out of development from yesterday. This will also include merging place when they are enclosed in a polygon then.

As stated in another comment, I just started using reitti a couple of days ago and initialized it with my apple watch trainings data.

I like that reitti tries to detect places but I also kinda hate it. Because of the multi year dataset I started with reitti created many places. Some of which are correct, some of which I understand, but overall, its just too much to have a good overview.

What I would like is a feature to:

• have manually created places (which are kept even on changing the automatic process)
• can be created before even visiting the location
• possibly with a higher preference for the algorithm to choose this place instead of creating a new one (but now sure regarding this)
• "saving" automatic generated places to mark them as "correct" and thus allowing me to keep them even on recalculation
• if possible: deleting places and keep the deletion "persistent" on recalculation (thus fiddling and testing with the settings is not too bad)
• maybe a custom image for places, comments, social features for multiple people using the instance?

Thoughts?

Yes, I understand your point. My main goal for reitti may differ from your usecase. I want reitti to be a software which works good enough without manual interaction. Mainly because I if need to babysit it, I would not use it. I am to lazy for that :D But I understand the need for manual interaction if wished. So, thank you for your input.

This should actually be possible to implement since we have the new polygon-/place-editor. You could draw a place somewhere and store that in the database.

* possibly with a higher preference for the algorithm to choose this place instead of creating a new one (but now sure regarding this)

At the moment, the algorithm just searches for places which contain that point of the calculated visit and it takes the first one which is found. If places have a polygon then the point must be contained in that, if not the point must be contained in the circle which is constructed around the point of the place and your search radius setting. There is no preference.

Places will not be recalculated, Visits and Trips will. If there is already a Place near the Visit, this will be taken. Else a new one will be created.

I was thinking about blocking areas where no Place is allowed to be created. But this would need to be thought out fully since at the moment I do not have a solution what happens if there should be a Visit at that blocked location. Should it be dropped, should it be moved to another nearby Place?

I like the idea of images for places but would need a reason to have them. The other ideas are also nice.
I think that it would extend the use cases for reitti. But I would need to understand your idea more.

From my point of view, at the moment it would not help to move reitti forward. I want it to move it first towards logging your movements and bringing back memories.For that I do not need high precision and I would focus more on the point in associating data to a Visit. Why, with whom and how did you visit a place at that day. How it felt. This could also be enhanced by some multi user interaction.

Please do not see this as a rejection, I am open to any ideas but only have so little time to tackle them all at once.
