Because there was no virtiofs driver for Windows (only for Linux) when I started the project.

Currently there exists one (but not for older Window versions) which is still pretty experimental and buggy, and as far as I know its transfer speed is still slower than using the Samba way. See the last part of this article: https://www.heiko-sieger.info/sharing-files-between-the-linux-host-and-a-windows-vm-using-virtiofs/ that compares both methods and comes to the conclusion Samba is still better.
