We have gone all-in on IPE 80 Corten Steel Beams connecting the peripheral walls to the main house:
To protect the steel from corrosion and avoid the appearance of rust, we have taken the action to paint them white. ⚪️
White enamel paint is the cheapest color by far; any other color cost 3x more because they don’t sell it in large quantities. White we buy in 2.5L “industrial” quantities: €27.89 (€11,16 / L)

whereas the Green is sold in 750ml cans for €24,99 (€33,32 / L) literally triple the price.

Green is a nice accent color for the hand rails and I’m glad we painted them that way because it shows less dirt, but it’s silly expensive for doing larger surface areas like the beams. 💸🫠
We’re going to be using roughly 10 litres of paint for 2 coats of all the beams. That will cost € 111,56 in white v. €333.20 in green; an extra €221…
So, what I’ve instructed Miguel to do is proceed with a single coat of white and if we decide it must be green, we treat that as “primer” and simply paint over it with green. 🟢
Note: to be clear: I agree that green looks good, however, given that the plan is for them to be covered in green plants ASAP, I’m really not fussed with having them in white for a few months as the vines grow. ⚪️⏳
Everywhere you see Beams (“vigas”) now will be Kiwi, Grape and Passion Fruit Vine Pergolas in 1-2 years time. 🥝 🍇 🍈 😍 the effect will be spectacular.
Painting the Beams White blends in with the White House in the short term.
Yes, in the short term, white is more of a contrast to the road, but also has a more “understated luxury” feel.
The IP68 garden lights we already have to put up outside are very similar to these shown in this image:
I think the white will look very good contrasting with the green leaves once the vines grow in.
