For college students, money is always of concern for anything including the meals that we prepare. Creating meals can be difficult for various reasons such as limited kitchen resources, cooking ability, and ingredient availability. No longer will a student simply resort to only a cup of noodles. With EasyChef, anyone can discover delicious recipes that is easy to make.
EasyChef is a web application that provides pages to view and (in some cases) modify profiles, recipes, and vendors. The goal is provide an application that the UH community will use in order discover simple and affordable recipes for their meals including where to get its associated ingredients. It illustrates various technologies including:
- Meteor: Framework used for server and client code.
- React: A Javascript library used to implement UI design.
- Semantic UI React: CSS framework within react to implement UI components.
- Uniforms: Used to present and display form information when users create new items.
The following is what is currently planned for what the system will eventually provide:
- Three primary collections (Profiles, Recipes, Vendors) as well as two "join" Collections (ProfilesRecipes, VendorItems) that implement many-to-many relationships between them.
- Top-level index pages that will manipulate the collections above.
- Authentication system using the Meteor accounts package to verify the credentials of who logs-in to the system.
- Notification system that connects with the collections to notify when items are on sale or when a user has used an ingredient in their recipe.
- Rating system (5 stars) to rate user posted recipes and quality of ingredients posted by vendors.
- Map of the UH campus community to allow students to find ingredients posted by vendors and see if a certain vendor item is available at a certain location (ex. Foodland @ Ala Moana).
NOTE: Due to costs of maintaining the application server, a live deployment of the site is currently not available.
First, install Meteor.
Second, go to https://github.com/easy-chef/easy-chef, and click the "Use this template" button. Complete the dialog box to create a new repository that you own that is initialized with this template's files.
Third, go to your newly created repository, and click the "Clone or download" button to download your new GitHub repo to your local file system. Using GitHub Desktop is a great choice if you use MacOS or Windows.
Fourth, cd into the app/ directory of your local copy of the repo, and install third party libraries with:
$ meteor npm install
Once the libraries are installed, you can run the application by invoking the "start" script in the package.json file:
$ meteor npm run start
The first time you run the app, it will create some default users and data. Here is the output:

You will also get the following message when you run this application:
Note: you are using a pure-JavaScript implementation of bcrypt.
While this implementation will work correctly, it is known to be
approximately three times slower than the native implementation.
In order to use the native implementation instead, run
meteor npm install --save bcrypt
in the root directory of your application.
On some operating systems (particularly Windows), installing bcrypt is much more difficult than implied by the above message. Bcrypt is only used in Meteor for password checking, so the performance implications are negligible until your site has very high traffic. You can safely ignore this warning without any problems during initial stages of development.
Intermittently, you may see the following error message in the console when the system starts up:

While irritating, this message appears to be harmless and possibly related to a race condition between the development instance of Mongo and Meteor. By harmless, I mean that in most cases, the console goes on to display App running at: http://localhost:3000/
and no problems occur during run time.
If all goes well, the template application will appear at http://localhost:3000. You can login using the credentials in settings.development.json, or else register a new account.
You can verify that the code obeys our coding standards by running ESLint over the code in the imports/ directory with:
meteor npm run lint

This system adheres to the Meteor guideline of putting all application code in the imports/ directory, and using client/main.js and server/main.js to import the code appropriate for the client and server in an appropriate order.
In order for a user to access the functions of this website, they will have to sign up and/or log in (if the user is already signed up). Users can also be registered as vendors, where they will be able to add and edit ingredients and their prices. Vendors will have to be approved by the admin.
By default, each user is only able to edit their own recipes. Also by default, each vendor is only able to edit their own ingredients. However, the settings file enables you to define default accounts. If you define a user with the role "admin", then that user gets access to special pages which lists all the recipes and ingredients defined by all users.
There will be screen shots of each page of the web application below. Each page section will have a description of how to navigate to the page and the page's uses.
The landing page is presented to users when they visit the top-level URL to the site. It will be similar to the image below that will serve as a basis for the final design.
The user home page is presented after a user logs-in with an account that has the "student" role. This page is similar to the landing page with the addition of new options such as "Add Recipe" that is available at the top of the navigation bar.
The vendor home page is presented after a user logs-in with an account that has "vendor" role. Accounts with the "vendor" role will have unique options in the navigation bar such as "Add Ingredient."
To navigate to the user profile page, use the drop down menu where the username is displayed on the navigation bar, then click "View Profile". Each user will have a personalized profile that presents information such as count of recipes added as well as favorite recipes shared by other users. It will also present a bio where users can describe themselves within the UH community. The mockup below represents a sample student profile. Vendors may have profiles with other types of information.
To edit the information displayed in the user profile, use the dropdown menu where the username is displayed on the navigation bar, then click "Edit Profile".
To make a recipe, click on the "Your recipes" navbar options to quickly write down your recipe.
A dedicated page to search all recipes that has been posted to the application. Here, users can search by name and filter results based on dietary restrictions. The page will present a list of cards with recipes that meet the search results. Clicking on the recipe name will take you to the dedicate page for that recipe.
The page dedicated to displaying information of a recipe that have been created by a student. This page present information such as the recipe name, author, image, ingredients, steps, and estimated total cost. The ingredients will be tied to information posted by vendors to allow students to see the lowest total cost to make the recipe. Additionally, users can submit feedback by submitting a 5 star rating at the bottom.
This page lists out all the recipes created by the user that is currently log in. In other words, you are able to easily access your own created recipes as well as edit them by clicking "Edit" at the bottom of each recipe. Simiarly to the search page, clicking on a recipe name will direct you to the individual recipe page.
This page lists out all the users who are signed up in the system in order to meet new people and contact them via email.
This page lists all the vendors who have registered with Easy-Chef to deliver to you fresh quality ingredients.
As a vendor the option is presented in the navbar called "Ingredients" where the "Add Ingredient" option can be selected to list down a new ingredient
A page accessible to vendors also this is also under the "Ingredients" menu which displays inventory of ingredients with the ability to edit or remove ingredients when necessary.
Here are some thoughts from some UH community members about the EasyChef application:
User experience and navigating through the pages feels intuitive for a modern application. I like the interface and design of the application, however I think adding recipes and ingredients could be improved by streamlining user inputs and mentioning specific details for things like ingredient size. Restrictions could also include more diets such as vegan, kosher, halal and low carbohydrates that way the app is moe inclusive for more people.Jorj C. (jcaguioa@hawaii.edu)
I like the design of the website it is easy to navigate and very user friendly. I like how the user is able to view a list of all recipes and adding new recipes is simple and clear. The vendor page is clean and has large logo to see who the venders are. I would like to see the home page with larger images because I feel like it is plain. The website is nice because it's simple to navigate and I like the concept of easy recipes for those who don't have good cooking utilities. I like the simple designs for adding and viewing recipes. I've seen similar apps that function similarly with sharing recipes, so I feel like this one would be especially useful for the local UH student community. It would be even better if there was function within an individual's account to save other users' recipes to refer back to later if they find ones they really like. It might also be even more helpful to be able to see recipes based on their difficulty or amount of ingredients because we all know how college students can be.Heather N. (hmhn@hawaii.edu)
The design looks super cool, very professional. I think it might be difficult for someone to get their account set up and see what different tools are availble just by looking at the home page.
